Hi,

First ever post in this section of OCuk.

I'm thinking of getting a new car and the idea of getting a KIT car sounds interesting. Is there any advice you could give me in terms of pricing model etc...

I'm a complete noob to this so any good sites I should be looking at etc.. would be of good help.

Can I build a kit car with a hard top too?
And use it everyday as my main car?

any info and input would be good.I have done a google but TBH i'm a bit overwhelmed by it all and it would be nice to talk with people who have done it and get some first hand experience etc..

Thanks :)

what sort of car are you hoping to own?

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk is good starting place...

Most 7's could be used everyday with wet weather gear and a car engine, but a long journey could become tiresome...

Ferrari replicas built from mk2 mr2's are a good everyday car, well as good as an mr2 anyway...

If you want to drive everyday, avoid a BEC like the plague...

:D

Thanks for the reply.

I think i would like a sporty car but with a solid top due to security and the british weather.

How much would a ferrari replica cost?

Westfield XI

Low power - low weight - low complexity

Huge fun. :D

Plus - reasonably accurate replica of a truely magnificent sports car.

*edit* Damn - just read the hard top requirement...that stuffs that then.

GT40 replica. :D
Or a Hawk HF2000

hasa breakdown of all the UK replicas you can get including f355's and f360's

extremes 360 kit runs about £6,000 plus the donor, you can bank on £13k at least if they supply all the extras like interior and wheels...

extremes 355 kit is £4000 so looking at around £11k for the full monty...

The evans 355 runs about £3k plus donor MR2, but you have to then source all the interior and wheels yourself...

Not cheap, but they do look really good when finished...

If you do a ferrari kit on a mr2 or a pug 407 i will personally come around your house and burn it to pieces :)
They are a monstrosity on this earth that I cannot see reason in.

You think the F355/F360 is ugly?

You cant see the point of a good looking economical car that is good to drive everyday, cheap to insure and you dont have worry where you park it (unless there are people like you around that might burn it?)

:p

No i think both are excellent cars.
However I DESPISE a tarted up MR2 that looks like them (with some very obvious faults).

Whats the cheapest hard top kit out there that i could fit a cheapish engine in that would be easily available?
Dont be fooled into thinking that by building a kit car your going to have a really nice car for under £1000. A properly built kit car will cost more than you think and a badly built car with look rough as can be.

If you want a main car for everyday use don't buy a kit, take your money and buy a proper car, a kit won't be as good for everyday use as pre built car for the same cash.

Very true...

My 7 cost best part of £15k to put together...

Yeah it can be done cheaper, but it will look and drive cheaper...

Guess I'm gonna look for a tidy second hand Mazda MX 5 then.
Is there a better roadster out there for around 7 grand?

Ive been told the MX 5 is hard to beat in the second hand market

A Fisher Fury can be had with a hard top. I dont use mine everyday, but I could if I wanted to. I have done about 8000 miles in it the past year.

Jonathan

Yeah just been looking on the site.Sounds good and I can fit different engines in them.

I cant see the option for a hard top though.

Got a link?
