Hi all,

Just stripped back a bit of rust from the drivers sill on my girlfriends 94 polo (mk3 coupe). Its not looking as great as I hoped:

Whats the best way of treating this so it doesnt get any worse for now? I've got some kurust to put on it, and also some anti rust primer.

Thanks for advice!

Krust isnt the best. The stuff that eats/dissolves rust is the best. Depending how bad it is though krust should be fine. Just hope that the rust hasnt eaten through to the inside of the sill otherwise you'll need to cut it out and weld a new bit of metal in. Not much more you can do. If you've ground it all away krust and anti rust primer should be fine :p

Looking at the pictures above it looks like hes already done that? Or with a wire end drill as some of the metal has become so thin and rotted through

I was only joking ;)

If I have to be honest it looks like it's been repaired before. What with the layers of paint and stonechip paint on there, a layer of filler and what looks like a ground down weld line I would say this is a previous repair you are trying to fix and that's why it's so grotty.

Personally I wouldn't try to be too fussy about this and just weld a small patch over the top and filler straight back over like has been done in the past. I might even be inclined to just forget about the patch and wag over the lot and forget about it until you get rid of the car because it'll just bubble back through anyway.

Yeah I'm tempted just to fill over it, and spray it up. The Polo isn't exactly going for concours. The bottom part of the sill seems to be coated with a much more textured paint, thats almost like a sticker, is this just stonechip paint?

I believe it has been attended to before, looks that way indeed.

Cheers for advice though, I've got some hammerite anti rust primer to go on it for now, should be ok to seal it temporarily shouldnt it? I don't have any topcoat, and I'm waiting on some POR15 from a mate...

Yeah the thick bumpy stuff is stonechip paint. Usually used by bodyshops to hide something underneath...

Dig further and it'll probably get worse, that's the only problem. What's left of that metal looks paper thin.
