Advice please folks, I'm looking at buying a Mondeo ST 155 06 plate.

I was researching these as they seem good cars; pretty quick, very good MPG, reasonable tax rates and enough space for 4 adults.
However there did seem to be a lot of engine problem reports related to the injectors failing costing £1-2k to fix.

Might be worth checking it out yourself or perhaps someone here with more experience can advise.

Aargh no not this again.

Full set of injectors (if you're unlucky enough to have 4 fail), genuine new Delphi ones are £300~£350 and it's an hour's work to fit.

Hence my above comment on doing your homework rather than believing the hype ;)

Looks good, do you really need a hatch? the boot is huge and unless you need to get something like a bike in there there shouldn't be any issues, that looks a much better buy than your original post.

I was just going to say I had only just noticed it was a saloon too, which is awesome - they look better and are quite rare too. Do you need a hatch for any reason (dog etc)?

I understand why they might be preferable, but why are they inherently better Fox?

How can i spot the above problems when I test drive the car? ( My 2nd choice)

I've written at length about them before (search my previous posts) but roughly -

Flywheel will be rattly at idle, could make it struggle to start and the first sign is often a quiet squeal when the clutch is depressed. New flywheel and clutch is £650 - thats the only problem I've had with my car in 18 months of ownership.

Injectors - a cloud of smoke on cold start after standing for a few hours. Redline it in second (when cold, while heating up and when warm) and if the glowplug light comes on and the car goes into limp home mode, one of the injectors is on it's way. As I said above, a bit of homework and you can have them all changed for sub £400

They look better (Except the Mk2 Mondeos, god that saloon was ugly), are normally sealed from the rest of the car so you get less cabin noise, and structurally the shell is stiffer.

Saloons are cars for young bachelors with jobs in finance - otherwise than that they are most useless cars in the world to anyone with regular life and job. Need roof rails for trips to B&Q, towing hook at the back if you live in a council that doesn't offer skip collection. Mate with van for moving houses. Delivery bookings for trips to IKEA. Stylish Thule box for family holidays.

My Toledo managed tip runs, ikea and house moves just fine - the boot was huge! Even had a 3/4 height server cab in the back before, had to go in through the back doors though :)

The 156 wasnt so good as the back seats didnt even fold down!
