We were talking about this at work yesterday and a guy there who seems to get on with everyone said he wouldn't even say goodbye to most people in the business if he left.

Moral of the story, people generally don't give a damn about you unless you're good friends outside of work.

Stayed in a job when I was much younger because I liked it, less than a year later they were unable to keep my position. I knew this was likely to happen and had a much better career opportunity during that time and wished I had took it back then.

Don't make the same mistake.

There is no loyalty in business, do whats best for you. They'll still be your friends if they are indeed your friends.

If they are friends worth keeping then you'll stay in touch one way or another. You can't let feelings for work colleagues stop your own progression. They wouldn't likey give it a second thought.

Sounds like a good prospect - take it and good luck :)

I am sure this is all great advice but I wouldst trust anyone that doesn't use maritime metaphors when giving job advice.

Jump! If the work has been dry for months then it might not be long until there are some internal changes anyway.

I had the same issue last year, I jumped... a month later everyone else was given notice.

personal feelings dont pay the bills.

I was in the same position as yourself a few years back.

I stayed where I was thinking it would get better. before I knew it a boy I worked beside had got the job I had been offered.

a few other jumped ship ( a wee maritime metaphor thrown in for good measure )
before I knew it the doors were closed and I was like the captain.. I went down with the ship.

In hindsight I wish I had gotten out when I had the chance.

Jump ship. I made the mistake of not jumping ship several years ago. I was working at a small engineering firm and rumours were that the boss was in financial trouble, probably because he just took on loads of new equipment. I started looking at other jobs and was offered a position of running the cycle department in our local Halfords (not very aspiring but it would have done me). The money was similar and it was within walking distance of where I lived at the time so I wouldn't have to run the gauntlet of the terrible A96 anymore. In the meantime I had spoken to the boss and asked him outright about the business and if my job was safe. He said all was good and it was just a temporary lack of orders. Out of loyalty I turned down the Halfords job and stayed put. Two weeks later, the week before Christmas the ******* laid me off!! Screw loyalty!!

As others have said... Look after Numero Uno

My Boss was my mate and I had worked for him for quite a while. It became obvious things were not looking good although he always got me work (This was a Drivers Agency).

I got the heads up from where I'm working now and so did the decent thing and talked to him myself.

He went under about a year later which would have meant I wouldn't have had the cream number I'm in now had I "Gone down with the ship".

The trouble is, I really like where I work. I like the people and I like the work (when there is some!)
I am torn between personal feelings and career development,

My opinion is that 'good people' is not a reason to stay in a job, although 'bad people' may be a reason to leave one. Generally speaking, you can make new friendships in a new company and if you get on that well with current colleagues, there is nothing to stop you socialising outside of work.

I never provided an update on this situation, so here it is.

I did it. I left last week and started my new job this week. So far so good, I am earning so much more and enjoying it.

When I left the old place the situation had not improved, no orders and sad glum faces everywhere, I wish them luck.
