Advice ...

Hi so after selling off my old build I'm currently in the process of picking up parts for my new build trouble is I'm kinda stuck with what chip to go for so a little help please!

Option A) I can go 8700k build.

or

Option B) Looking on the MM/ known auction site pick up an older 6700k/7700k and motherboard for the price of the 8700k chip alone.

Whatever route I go the chip will be in a gaming rig, running a 27' 144hz@ 1440p monitor. Thankyou for reading any advice is welcome :)

My own results from overclocked ryzen 1700 to stock 8700K

I also have the same monitor specs, the results are noticable. Whether that is worth the extra cost is down to you.

I wouldn't bother with anything currently given the recent security flaw. The next round of cpus will be pretty big and AMD could gain real traction with a well clocked and priced 8 core in April.

It will take some time for Intel to sort out it's CPU's, but Ryzen+ will be with us in April. TBH I'd go with a 1900X and some fancy B-Die RAM.

If I went for Am4 what would the refresh bring on that socket? I'm just looking at keeping costs down I never realised how much moving to 1440p would be.

1440p isn't the issue here imo. It's the 144hz and for that you're going to want the fastest cpu you can afford.

Oh it ain't cheap!
Do you already have a gpu?

I got nothing apart from a case and power supply, its literally a new build I'm even getting a new desk :D that's why I even suggested getting an older I7 to keep costs down. I am weighing up the whole 1080p@ 144hz and 1440p@144hz as graphics card and monitor prices to complement each other are insane

What games you looking at playing?

That’s the thing I literally play all sorts. From gta, fallout, racing games, FPS, even the football managers I just love all types of games. I also after a while like to run mods to make things interesting too.

Probably going to get hammered here but get intel. You know things are going to work well, things like indie games, mmo's etc can have performance issues on ryzen due those particular games not being optimised for multi core.

If anyone can say how well Ryzen performs in games I’m certainly open to Am4 I know that both intel an Amd chips like fast ram so the savings will be on what I go for chip wise.

Most games its fine, MMO's things like PUBG etc and they get beaten by 7th gen i5's.

Really? I suppose if they are not optimised then that’s the case, looks like I will be going coffe lake as nobody seems sure on intels next offerings.

The next chips are going to be a while away yet I'd think. Rumor has it they have an 8 core coming but that's going to be in the region of £400+
