Aero and windows index problems

OK trying to be methodical I have uninstalled the platform update

Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)

And Aero is back on so I guess it is this update that is causing the problem. I just dont know if not installing it will cause any future issues or risks, although it is not a security update so maybe its ok to leave it for now.

Any suggestions?

that rings a bell. i seem to remember it's an update that has been causing BSODs for some people so you're lucky to get away with just aero not working.

that update is required for IE10. if you don't intend to install that, you'll be fine without it.

Well problem is back again :( Aero failed, Windows Desktop Manager keep shutting down etc

I have 2 hard drives C:/ which is an SSD with windows on it and the boot, and D:/ is 1TB and has all other stuff on it.

If I do a new install of windows will I still keep my data on my D: drive but lose everything on the SSD?

And is it as straight forward as just put the windows disk in and select the "install" instead of update option and let it do its thing?

Cheers

Performed full virus scan and it was clear.

So can you please tell me that if I perform a destructive full re install of windows I will only loose data from the Hard Drive windows is being put on?

As this appears to be my only option to get everything reinstalled correctly?

Thanks

Al

Hi again

I unplugged the second hard drive and reinstalled windows on the SSD.

After I plugged the 2nd Hard drive back in they programs and contents of the drive dont show up in the list when you press the "windows (start)" button or when you go to the add or remove programs via the control panel.

I then tried CCleaner program and that also is not showing any of the contents of the 2 nd Hard drive.

Drive manager shows all the drives that are plugged in and shows them correctly (no unallocated etc)

How do I get the system to see the 2nd Hard drive again and display the contents in the various utilities?

you need to re-install everything. most software modifies the registry in windows for all it's settings/file type associations etc. it may also place many files in the windows folder. all that will be lost on a clean install and that's why it's pretty pointless installing to a 2nd drive - unless you are desperately short of space on the OS drive.

That's how I got the PC from Overclockers, they set the OS on the SSD and had the
2nd drive empty

So I will need to wipe everything and reinstall on the 1 Hard drive and start all over?

I just mainly have loads of games so its just a case of methodically reinstalling all them after.

As im a noob lol, do I do the following:

1. Delete the drive im going to install windows on
2. unplug the SSD
3. Alter the boot order so the planned OS drive is first
4. place windows cd in and install

Or do I just unplug the SSD, amend the boot order, then put in the windows CD and install?

even though the programs won't work, you should still be able to access data that was on the drive. if you don't see a drive letter in explorer, start>right click computer>manage>disk management. can you see it there?

well deleted all and reinstalled on the 1TB hard drive, and now reintalling my stuff with no issues at this time.

My index score went from 7.8 to 5.9 as the SSD previously scored (7.8) and the normal HD scores 5.9 but everything else is the same.
