After a sporty a car around £2k... what not to get? What to get :D

the hyundai coupe looks nice but drives rottenly. The v6 is underpowered too.

As above I guess you need to ask yourself what you actually want from the car. The 306 is a cracker btw - get a good one and you'll be happy but the more neglected examples can throw up lots of not particularly expensive issues - being french some areas of them are a bit hard to work on.

I hate to tell you this but most girls dont give a damn about cars, they like them to be new, shiny and pretty but dont really care all round

When I first became able to insure the kind of cars I always liked I just set about buying them, when I became bored of tue first or discovered I didn't like it I just flogged it and bought another or swapped it. The thing about any of these cars (mr2, prelude, gti6, v6 vags, e36 etc) is there is always somebody looking for one

Wow, 5 posts for the time it took to write my previous post.

Peugeot 406 Coupe, I remember a 2 door a few years ago that looked real nice. Will have to check them out, hmm but French.

Ford Cougar. Hmm theres something about their image which dont sit too well with me.

Hey Paul. W join in dude if you're sailing the same boat, just so long as we dont go look at the same car heh heh. Knock some ideas around?
Seriously the french thing is a bit silly.
Peugeot make engines that are in ford diesels
The mini cooper s
A bmw 1 series
That v6 is bombproof as well :s

You seem to have no qualms with a korean p.o.s and generally peugeot body panels fair better than german cars of the same age.
E46s are getting rusty now....

Honest question.
Do you want a car that is genuinely good or just a all show no substance car?
Because you list contains both a civic type r and a hyundai coupe which is a bit meh... and mismatchdd
One is like a little dog that keeps peeing on your settee and running around like a lunatic.
The other is a boring lazy midly podgy labrador

Good question.
Like the analogy :D

I guess im sick of being in a car im a bit ashamed of getting out of & people seeing. A bit vein I know but ive had quite a few sheds & now theres a chance to get something ok.
Also I like the visuals such as the elegant lines of a coupé & a sculpted interior.
Performance would be nice but not at the top of the list & perhaps under 8sec to 60 would be amazing but I think a Celica 140 would annoy me.
Then theres maintenance, especially as its required every day & im not rich, so something not too exotic?

Hmm these requirements seem a bit adventurous for the price, D'oh!

There not. Personnally a 406 v6 coupe meets and exceeds all of thosee
Heated leather interior.
A bombproof engine with ridiculous brakes
Designed by pininfarina.
0-60 in 7.8
And thats mainly because the gearing is so long. Its properties after 60 mean that it just continues pulling on and on.
Low running costs, huge parts availability

Well, for the past couple of weeks ive sat and looked at literally loads on AT and PH. All of them have already been mentioned in this topic!

I dont like french cars. Never have. to me the Pug 406 looks boring, slightly ugly and a bit girly. Not for me. I've also come to the conclusion that I personally need to save more money to get something decent.

I wouldnt mind something bigger (currently have mk1 focus), and at the moment ive got my heart set on an Accord Type S 2.4 estate. I have a thing for big petrol estates <3 However Im going to need around £3.5k so unless a super bargain comes up for something different, im going to hold out. Its either the Accord or a coupe of some description!

Dont get me wrong, im sure there's a good few of decent quick cars out there for 2 grand. I'm after something which is less than 10 years old though, and thats where 2 grand doesnt get you very far.

Okay, think I should be sensible here & its been mentioned before as being better than a ST170...
Seat Leon Cupra.
It may just be within my reach, especially if a garage will pt-ex/scrap my Mondeo.
The performance (omg the torque) & styling that wont attract the wrong attention (lots of smack heads/drug dealers around here) & hopefully reliability with being a bit VW clinched it.
I know I wanted something pretty, but I think the image of a Cupra trumps the prettiness of a Celica.
Now I need learn about them & start loving beans on toast.
How do you fit 20 valves around 4 pots for instance... this sounds like a lot going on in a 1.8L.

Usualy 3 inlet valves and two out per clinder.
Ferrari 355's
Certain cars with a toyota 4age engine too.
Not necessasrily better that way though.

There is potential for bills though... turbo etc.

The cupra is a good car - potential bills but if you're half handy you can do the majority of work yourself..if the turbo went ans you were able to remove it to send of for a refurb it wouldn't cost more than a few hundred to sort.

More likely to suffer maf / coilpacks in all likelyhood anyway - easy to get at

SAET Leon Cupra is the winner!

Yeah im reading about coil packs going & cost £30. Although I only do 4000 miles/year.
Maybe the turbo would be the thing to worry about going?
Its quite heavy too so maybe it wont rattle so much as my Mondeo with having a VW influence?
Reading up on them now, but think it will be tough to get an ok one for £2300, maybe i'll wait another month so have £2700.
MPG is ok & similar to my current Mondeo as it is atm lol.
If someone asks what car you have do you say Cupra? that sounds awesome :)

You'll get plenty of cupra for your money - wont touch any semi decent cupra R though.

Decent coil packs were closer to 70 when I had my a3 1.8t

Turbo is hardly likely to go unless its remapped and been poorly serviced for a good few years of its life

SAET Leon Cupra is the winner!

Ok, if during the next 3 weeks I see one within my reach i'll post the link on here, see what you guys think.
I'm trying to convince my mechanically knowledgeable friend to come along when I go look at one so hopefully he'll be able make it.

Is a £3 text HPI check ok or would you blow £20 on a fully loaded check with this type of car? Or is a £3 check ok from a garage? ta

gen multi checks from hpi.com - they come with free 7 day free insurance :)

Congratulations for your choice, a lot of car for the money.
Watch out for oil sludge on the 1.8t engine (google for more info) apart from that there are no horror stories. They are common cars so parts are available if the odd bit goes wrong and there are plenty of resources available online.

Its proving difficult to find a tidy Cupra R which I presume is the 210hp or 225hp version?
Some have 18" alloys, bigger exhaust & the dash jerry rigged to fit a large stereo & all this puts me off, instead preferring something more stock, even if it includes the original cassette player.

The normal 180hp is certainly more common & some have been remapped to 210hp.
Does this mean they're all the same engine anyway & its just the ECU thats different?
Trying Google all this now lol

The Cupra R engines are similar to those in the audi TT in that they have twin inter coolers. The difference between the 210 and 225 is very small I believe. Both will remap to around the same figures.

Also really not sure you will get a Cupra R for £2k?

Yeah its looking that way, may have to wait another month but cant see any for £2600 yet anyway.

May settle for a 180 at £2200 + a scrap Mondeo if a garage will pt-ex it, see how the landscape is in 3 weeks but getting a feel for the prices & knowledge now I think is invaluable.

3 to 3.5 is the minimum you want to spend on an R.

In a similar vein dont buy an overpriced cupra just because its from a trader - these have fallen far enough for you to pretty much have your pick at 2.3ish
