I loved playing Age of Empires 2 but didn't like the 3D interface of AOE3. Any else feel the same? Or is it just as good when you get into it?

Are there any other decent alternatives that you think are as good as or better than AOE2?

Thanks,

Jon

You could try Age Of Mythology if you havent already? Made by the same people as AOE2, similar setup.

There's also Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, which is esentially AOE2 modded to Star Wars theme.

You mean just rts games or set in the same era as age of empires?

If you just want a good rts try supreme commander or company of heroes imo :)

I didnt like aoe3 much either.

I like that era. But any kind of strategic game like that is likely to do it for me. Not too into mythical things though like dragons and stuff.

Age of Empires 2 is a classic because it focus's on base building just as much as building armys. No recent RTS has done that with the possible exception of Rise of Nations.

As Mucky Pup mentions Galatic Battlegrounds is brilliant take on AOE2, it also introduces Jedi, Air Units and Shields.

I also hated AOE3 but loved the previous aoe games...

As said before by some:
Age of mythology is okay, but titans exp. ruined it a bit imo, 3d tho...
Rise of nations is very good.
Empire earth ( the first) is superb, it is 3d yes but still had the old feel to it kind of...
First gen Cossacks games are superb ( cossacks 2 is bad tho imo), so European wars, art of war and Back to war ( which is a standalone with all the features but the campaign from the first 2, I really recommend back to war...).
Star wars galactic battlegrounds is aoe2 with a star wars theme, good fun :).

BFME isn't too good imo...
Empire earth 2 was terrible and 3 didn't look too well from pics, I'd recommend getting the original but I haven't tryed 3 so I don't know...

Give dawn of war a blast, you may like it.

Cant recommend wc3+expansion enough, though its more about strategy in battles than heavy base building, micro management if you like.

Wc3 has no good single player random map option, and tbh, without going online it's pap :(. Though online it's superb.

I know it's not often mentioned but another option might be Earth 2160 - I bought it when it came out originally and haven't touched it for a few years but it's all right if you get into it - although can be a drag.

I loved AoE 3 but wasn't ever much good at it :p

Am better at things like Sup Com and CoH (although far from a good player) ...

the scenario is not exactly short though, and the skirmish on SP isnt exactly bad either, its definately worth a try tbh.

It does have a good story line I thought though snowdog.

It was years ago but iirc it was not that special, but I was trying it back then when I was a hardcore AOE2 fan, I was just mainly annoyed by the lack of a random map option in SP, which is all I did in AOE2 really :p.

I can't comment on the campaign though, it was too long ago, I don't remember it properly...

I've now grown out of it a bit, I'm only playing Civ4, CoH and supcom really in the strategy genre...
