Ageia Physics : Is it worth it??

I think i might just waste the money and pick it up when i finish work (if its still there that is :( )

One thing thats bugged me about nvidia integrating physx into the drivers for the 8 and 9 series cards, surely using physx in this way will significantly lower gaming performance when enabled.... ok on the dual gpu cards one could have the physx load onto it which, depending the game should not have a large impact on performance at all but those of us with single gpu cards will surely suffer from this...

does that make sense to anyone?

Like anything else, I guess it adds a level of flexibility, which is nice. Your GPU won't always be working flat out, so if there are spare cycles, why not use them for something else? Won't help in Cry(ple)sis(tem), but in other games (especially as most of us run with vsync on) it will be a potential free boost with some extra bling.

On a personal note I think physics is more important than graphics (as are story, originality, balance etc...) and I think it's sad that the industry seems to judge worth almost solely on looks - this is IMO largely responsible for the slow uptake on physics. You just don't get that hit of 'wow' like you did when you first plugged in a stand-alone 3D card all those years ago and ran quake again, the effect is more subtle so often overlooked.

Half-life 2 really gave us a glimpse of how physics can become an integral part of a game, so lets hope it realises its potential now that the big players are in on it!

For £15 you may as well get it just for the sake of it. Cellfactor is an okay game, so it will at least run well with it. If not just to mess around with some nice looking features in the tech demos.

Thats not it at all - after Intel buying Havok, nVidia needed a presence in the physics world to ensure they were competitive and could get a piece of the market - made sense to buy Agiea to get that presence and not because they like their implementation at all...

fair point, but it may pan out to be a win-win situation..

now that nvidia are implementing the physX API into GGPU, we're more likely than ever to see new games rolling out with H/W physics support.. which everyone here should be supportive of :)

Just be afraid when he uses his version of multi-quoting :p

Hes already exhausted bold and italics so I suspect the colour guns will be out ;)...

ps3ud0

“heres a better question
why is Pottsey unable to use to quote button,“

Here is an even better question. Why is it only this forum that complain about the way I post yet all the others are ok? Why was it ok to post in the way I do since 2001 up to about 2006 ish. But in 2007/8 its suddenly a problem for some people? What’s changed in 2007/8?

Well they do say Yellow on blue is easier to read for some people.

Nothing has changed, it's just ******* annoying and makes your posts almost impossible to read if you "quote" more than once. I guess it's just starting to annoy people.

Something has changed. It wasn’t annoying before. It’s not annoying on the other forums. Only a handful of people suddenly found it annoying after I started posting about Ageia.

It doesmt make my posts impossible to read in fact many people find it easier to read. Saying that which is easyer to read white on blue or yello on blue, perhaps I should have a poll.

It would be easier to read with using the more uniform way of quoting but it's hardly a deal-breaker.

On topic: I'd buy a physx card for £15, even though I think they're a fairly pointless waste of time/cash (and even more so since Nvidia bought them out and are supposedly integrating physics onto GPU). £15 is a small enough amount of cash that I'd spend it just to play with the demos/use it as a door-stop.

Yelow just makes my eyes hurt, and I dont see how bold white quotes is going to make it easier to read, I find the propor quote box easier to read.

whats wrong with the way pottsey posts quotes? as long as he uses the quotation marks i cant see why there should be any issue? seems like people have run out of ammo to fire at agiea's physx implementation and are now just attacking pottsey. :(

and for 15 quid id have that agiea ppu any day, id even get 3 of them for each of my gaming machines.

You have 3 gaming machines?

Why not just one good one?

It's always been irritating, it's just when your trying to have a discussion it gets very tiresome to the point where everyone ends up passing comment.

It took me 4 mouse clicks to make this post + the time taken to type this. Would have taken longer to manually copy, paste and edit.

He isn't breaking the rules and it's simple to read and understand. To why it is a problem for anyone escapes me unless they have terrible eyesight or problems understanding the bold part is the quoted part, honestly, it's not that hard . It seems as if you're right Cyber ;). Ran out of fuel so out come the excuses to cry about something else. :o

If it’s always been irritating why only complain now not for the past 8 odd years I have been posting on here like this? It all started when I started posting about Ageia and the forums where I don’t mention Ageia no one says a thing about how I post. Which leads me to believe your just having a go at me because I support Ageia/hardware physics. After all its only the anti Ageia people that don’t like the way I post. When I posted a lot about PowerVR no one said anything about how I post and I have a lot more PowerVR posts over the years then Ageia.

Anyway I had that poll years back and more people said they prefer the way I post then didn’t and last time I stopped people said they miss it. So I am not going stop now.

As for 3 gameing PC's there are lots of reasons to have more then one. I try not to scarp old PC's and just add them to the network for freinds to use. LAN's are much better when you know the PC on the network and have everything setup.

Well said Pottsey :D. I like reading your posts. Always sporting a pleasant manner and informative. You never resort to how low others will go so just keep up the great work and ignore the pitiful cries ;).
