Agony

Got my key for this today but noticed there is a major fallout over the censorship issue. Apparently the developers had to cut some parts to avoid an Adult Only rating which would have prevented the game being released on consoles, the promise however was to provide an uncensored patch for the PC version. Now there are rumours flying about that that is no longer going to happen. The devs haven't confirmed or denied the rumours but their silence is leading people to the conclusion that there won't be a patch. Will be interesting to see how it pans out...

I dunno...looks a little rubbish and the demonic voices are pretty lame. Interesting how they describe it as "critically acclaimed" when it hasn't been released or reviewed yet. Avoiding for now...and probably for good, as the idea of playing hours of that above doesn't appeal.

Yeah I refer to my previous statement

This is very meh for me :(

Still appropriate and amazing how little they have moved since I posted that

Seems like the patch won't coming... not through official channels anyway:

I hate censorship as much as the next guy and whilst they state it's only 20 seconds that has been cut, that is enough to make a difference - I remember when Last House on The Left got it's first release in the UK with 21 seconds of cuts - those 21 seconds did make a significant impact on the film though. Anyway, I'm still looking forward to my trip through hell - should be a unique experience if nothing else...

A lot of backers grumping they haven't received their keys yet - steam keys are supposed to be distributed to backers at 5pm tonight and there has been a delay on physical copies for consoles. I suppose you would be a bit annoyed if you were a backer and seen other folk playing it before you. Kudos to CDkeys who made my key available to me yesterday - no pre-loading available so roll on 5pm I guess.

Ok so just played it for 70 minutes. First impressions are good for me so far - I could have spent just 10 minutes doing the first objective and then proceeding to the next 'area' however I spent an hour exploring - the first place was full of tunnels with some areas only accessible by crouching or through a narrow gap/crack in the rock wall that can be squeezed through, or by burning away roots to proceed further. Exploring rewards you with letters to find and statues that apparently unlock stuff in the galleries (I found 3 but couldn't see what it unlocked when I had a quick look in the gallery). I found a place with a pool of water/blood but with not much room overhead - crouching down allowed me to swim under it which took me to another chamber, however doing this extinguished my torch and this game is seriously dark in some areas without it! Further to that, I was warned that demons are attracted to fire and not to get too attached to the torch so some difficult decisions await! There is a real sense of disorientation and cluster phobia when exploring too. I haven't found anything particularly explicit or shocking yet, aside from a few of what look to be candles made out of fetus' and an apple that clearly had a quite detailed vulva on it. I've heard folk mention how slow the movement is and it's true you do move quite slowly although the sprinting is considerable faster albeit limited to about 10 seconds after which you run out of stamina - personally I think this is true to life; if you were ever to find yourself in such an environment, I imagine your movement would be either very slow and cautious or running with everything you've got.

If you're not particularly into horror, aren't intrigued by the idea of exploring hell and are the kind of person that uses 'walking simulator' as a derogatory term then this game probably isn't for you. I haven't encountered any combat yet although there has been mention that the torch will fend off smaller enemies - I don't expect the combat to be significant to the general gameplay in any way though. It seems to me that the majority of the gameplay is going to be the exploration, finding your way to the next place or finding an object to allow you to proceed. I don't think this is the kind of game that will get universal acclaim but for those who are in to this sort of thing it will be a great experience and a real treat, I'm confident I'm going to love every minute of it based on what I've seen so far.

So much promise in the trailers, I was excited for this title and when seeing the pretty impressive title menu and the first @45 minutes I thought this would be a great gaming experience. Alas after the initial wow factor and about an hour into the game, I have already passed the threshold of feeling I got my money's worth. I was impressed at the start but the further and deeper I went into the game the more I saw its flaws, bugs, collision detection, textures (apart from @30 minutes into the game) became really bad and to the point where I feel the gfx and level layout where rushed and lacking big time, we certainly not seeing 2018 visuals here, more like 2008. Much of the lighting after the initial game start were bloody awful, pools of blood shimmered like pools of quicksilver, many lighting effects became more like being inside an 80's tech noir night club, full of neon & black lights. It has become very disorientating to move around in most locations now and textures, models and placement of objects feel random, rushed and just a mess tbh. I am well beyond the point of frustration and apart from first @45-60 minutes of the game, I have completely lost interest and enjoyment from this game. I will probably slog on cause I can't refund it anymore and perhaps I will discovered better parts of the game but I doubt it. I just decided to write this as I reached a fair way into the game and was climbing this tower with a winding staircase, had to discover a sigil and I ended up on a balcony near the top of the tower overlooking the panorama of the landscape I just traversed and I could not believe how retro and awful it looked. Comparing this game to other recent games in which they represented Hell and such, like Doom, Evil Within 2 and the excellent Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice, this game does not come even close to the standard of these games in visual, design, sounds, game-play. The overall looks, feel and game-play feel like a late Alpha or Beta release of a 10 year old game.

If you're playing and enjoying it then good for you, I hope you feel you get your money's worth but to me, this another major disappointment and empty promises from trailers which made it look so much more then I am seeing and playing here. This is a real shame cause this has so much potential and I wish I would have gotten another Hellblade or Doom experience here cause that would have made me happy with this purchase.

My 2cs.

A shame you're not feeling it. I'm not particularly sensitive to graphics so hopefully that won't bother me. I agree it's disorientating to move around but at the moment I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the devs that this was deliberate. I just got killed in the maze - got caught 3 times and on the 3rd occasion couldn't find a body close enough to take over. That was enough for me for one night as I've not desire to try again immediately afterwards - I have no idea how many skulls I'm supposed to collect to proceed so it did feel a bit like aimless wandering although it is a maze after all and I'm still enjoying the environment. Hope the game picks up again for you...
