Air filter speed boost?

I don't understand people who buy cars to a budget then look to spend money making it go faster.

The same money would net you far more bhp : pound if you just laid out more for a better base car.

Get a 2.0 Zetec from a Mondeo and put it in the fiesta.

The 1.6S, RS Turbo and RS1800 are the best mk3 models.

I take it the £70 is for a cone filter? Which isn't worth doing on a small engine, especially without a heat shield which costs a bit more.

I'd just get a decent make replacement panel filter which are only £30 odd. It won't make much difference, but I've always changed mine for some reason :)

Same principle as buying a cheap E8400 and a 200 quid watercooling kit to clock it to 4.5GHz.

It's a fun project and in many cases is actually a good investment.

However...I don't believe this is one of those cases :p

We only had a limited budget, and thats the best we could come up with for the price, but now I have seen a lot of modding sites, and wondering what you can buy/do to get speed boosts out of it? As far as I can remember the guy we are buying it off of has had the engine tuned already

You could buy a new engine, and a new car to put it in.

Trying to "tune" a car like this is pointless - speaking from experience, put any money you might throw into "tuning" into a savings account and use it towards your next car.

This car will have to last me and my other half a good 5 years, the current car is a 1.1. We basically want this car so we can survive on the motorway due to the current car not being able to maintain speeds.

I was hoping there might be something, anything cheap to be able to give any decent speed boost, or increase petrol consumption. If not then I will leave the car as is

I think what you meant was decrease petrol consumption? However when you said is more accurate as it won't do much except make the car growl a bit and tempt you to step on it harder.

I would put funds into possibly upgrading the sound system or improving other such driving comforts.

If your current car isnt adequate for the type of journeys you want to do, your only option is to change it.

Unless the current filter is blocked, changing it will make SFA difference. A blocked filter can cause massive performance problems (I know this first hand), but I suspect a 1.1 not being able to maintain motorway speeds is otherwise known as "normal"

Sell it and buy something more suitable

It probably won't make a massive difference to performance, but you may like the effect it has on induction noise. I'd never pay that much for an induction kit myself though.

Take the cat out is about the only cheap way to get a wee bit of power, but then it may fail an mot and will be illegal.

Totally pointless mod on a Fiesta. Put that £70 towards your next car.

Totally pointless but something each and everyone one of us has a burning desire to do with our first cars.

Do it and learn from the experience!

Your probable conclusion:
It's noisier, sounds cooler and adds to the placebo effect that you are indeed making more progress than normal. If you do any motorway miles some can be quite boomy and annoying. Even on a 1.2, you may make an extra 1 or 2BHP. It's also possible you will lose power.

Looks like some websites that say about increased performance are telling little white lies then. Just wish there was a list of things you could do to a 1.4Si (Sports Injection) to either increase the speed, or to get you more miles to the gallon, or preferably both ;)

Si is just a trim level, sports injection means bugger all :(

Some websites will exaggerate the truth to sell their product, they're not going to say "it doesn't make any difference".
