Air filter speed boost?

I seem to recall reading a review that said these bolt on filters had no or little effect unless you went all out and got a full induction kit to bring in colder air. The review also suggested that for some engines it's actually restricted the amount of air coming in when compared to the standard fit airbox.

I heard that the best Air Filter induction kit was the K&N ones, or a name like this which is what costs the most money than another non-branded product

take out any extra items weighing the car down, this will make the most difference for no cost.

You could even setup a remote control for the car so you don't have to sit in it making it even faster.

I wouldnt need a remote control for it, I would need to be sitting in it to drive it around, especially when it comes to motorway driving, that will be the real test to see if it keeps up with high speeds for a big chunk of time, especially going from London to Blackpool for a summer holiday mid august

The majority of aftermarket airfilters dont filter properly.

They get increased induction, by making the tiny holes in the filter media bigger. This means larger particles can make it into the combustion chamber. This is a bad thing.

The only aftermarket airfilters that provide anything like standard filtration and increased flow are the Apexi kits (IIRC). They are usually expensive though.

The Apexi power intakes do seem very highly rated. Was going to get one myself before christmas last year, £35 and a free adaptor. Wish I had as the prices have shot up. My partner has got a mk4 Fiesta Si. Not a bad little car and is quite happy to sit at motorway speeds and above. Dont know much about the MK3 though.

Don't take this the wrong way but buy one with a better engine in the first place.

NA Tuning is expensive and offers very few gains vs the same amount spent on a turbo car.

Yeah but the power delivery is so much better and enjoyable. If i ever had the choice between equal BHP N/A and turbo. I would pick the N/A all the time :)

Apexi air filters are great but require making a CAI system. I relocated mine into the passenger side wing and compared to my old OMP panel filter i have most proberly gained 5 BHP tops. If i had just left it in the engine bay I would have most proberly lost power compared to the standard panel filter. As nuts said though it is pointless uprating unless you couple it with other upgrades. Mines running a larger inlet manifold, Full stainless exhaust manifold and system, Uprated cams and timing advanced to 17 degrees.

price:bhp on ITBs is so behind FI. Bit of a pain to tune and performance varies on enviromental conditions, then theres whether you run with socks for filteration or not :(

They sound great though :D

My 172 made 10 BHP less on ITBs than the turbo but were way more enjoyable, fuel economy was pants though.
