Air flow problem (I think)

Hi, long time lurker here...

I recently upgraded my system with this.

It's running at about 44 idle (not great) and goes over 80 running prime95. I think air-flow is my problem.

I have a Lian-Li PC-G70 case with a 120mm fan lower front (in), 120mm fan side (out) and 120 fan back (out). They are the fans that came with the case (yes I know, get rid!)

My question is two-fold
1. Are my fans configured correctly? If not how should I have them setup?
2. Can you recommend some quiet & high volume 120mm fans to replace the ones I have?

Thanks :)

If it was my case i would change the side fan to in and leave the others as they are.Try running with the side off your case and see if the temps drop,if they do its a good indicator that you have an airflow problem.

As your fans are set up at the moment you have negative airflow,if you change the side fan to out that will change to positive airflow,if nothing else your case will get less dusty. You could try changing the fans for more powerful ones at a higher RPM with higher CFM,but with power comes an increase in noise generally.

What's your ambient temps like in that case you cooler might be doing a good job if you have a higher ambient temp,as it stands you don't have any room for overclocking at those temps as i like to keep my temps below 80c overclocked at load.

Thanks, I'll change the side fan to flow in and see what results I get.

The 2 fans on the PCU cooler are currently running in low noise mode (about 70%) - I'll up those to full and see how much that helps.

Right, I've changed the side fan to flow in and set both CPU fans to full speed and I'm seeing the following:

I ran prime for 10 minutes, are these temps OK or should they be lower on air cooling?

Are those temps running at 4Ghz at load,if so those temps are not that bad at all,i like to keep my OC temps below 80c at load.

By the way i cant really see from the screenies but does your +12v read 9.15v,that is very low, must be an error with speedfan, could try looking in the bios to see what the +12volt reading is in there..

If running prime95 small fft test (not blend) those temps would be grand at 4ghz, but the vcore in the cpuz shot seems a wee bit high for a DO stepping i7 cpu.

The kit came pre-overclocked from here so it's not my setting.

I've looked at others settings on air and seen a lot of people using 1.325v to get 3.8 so my 1.33 doesn't seem that high to me especially when I'm getting 4.0 and stable - but then I don't know that much about o/c'ing really.

I guess I could try lowering it and then check for stability...

What is a good core voltage for a i7 920?

Theres a Gigabyte overclocking guide floating around the web in PDF. Which they set:

1.400v for 4ghz
1.500v for 4.2ghz

So all you using 1.33ish should count yourself lucky. I have to use at least 1.38v to get 4ghz stable.
