Can anyone recommend an air fryer?

To cut my take away addictions I am learning to cook. However, we all know there will come a time when I want some chips and a chicken burger or some hot wings.

Can anyone recommend one? How well do they handle home made things that could be dripping with egg white and bread crumbs?

Are they easy to clean?

we use the basic Phillips air fryer and its great, so much better than oven chips, cleaning is very simple - essentially shove it in the dishwasher and clean the mesh by hand for any harder bits.

not sure about putting moist things in though, I imagine as long as your crumbs leave a semi solid coating they should be fine.

I have a tefal actifry and to be honest it does not do that good a job on chips.
They look just right on the outside but are raw in the middle.
If I cook them a little longer they become hard as stone on the outside and just right in the middle.

I tried the actifry on Maris Pipers mostly and a few other varieties with the same result.
I dunno if its just my experience with it or if others have the same problem.

Can't fault it after a year of use.

Kids love it as they can dump their own tea some nights in it. Chicken strips/chips/fish fingers etc and cook it themselves without needing to use the oven etc.

I've cooked drumsticks/spring rolls etc in it and worked out great. Fairly easy to clean (drawer bit goes in the dishwasher!)

Good value and easy to use.

Cooking your own chips from scratch - chip the potatoes, put them in cold water for 15 mins, rinse them, then a tea spoon of oil and salt on them and put them in the fryer, Turn out great.

Not just you, they are crap for chips, and if you leave the paddle in it turns them into breadcrumbs.I do frozen chips in it but only leave the paddle in for a few minutes otherwise it crushes them.Anything soft just use it without the paddle.

We've got a Tefal Actifry. It's expensive for what it is but it makes great chips and takes all the effort out of risotto.

Chips take about 40-45 minutes but it depends how crispy you want them.

Having used a few acti-fryers I have yet to find one that does "good" chips. They're not bad but as per usual they are also nothing like the advertiser claims. Wierdly I found a good solution is to fry oven chips in an actifryer (Tesco Finest or Frozen) as the result is pretty good (No comparison to "proper" chips). Another way is to boil the potatoes before frying which also yields a pretty good result.

However if I was to pick one actifryer I would go Tefal (Just take out an extended warranty as I keep hearing friends saying theirs died just after going out of warranty) :)

I'd actually like the actifry chips if they are just golden on the outside and cooked in the middle. I'll try and boil before I cook in the actifry however wont they become too soft and breakup when the actifry paddle moves them around?

Not if you get it just right as you want to boil them somewhere between a potato ready for roasting and a par boiled potato :)

If you have an airfryer, grab a bag of Tesco's salt and pepper chips. 10 mins, shake halfway through. Best chips ever.
This is also good :)

I can guarantee it will turn them into breadcrumbs if you do that.
Remove the paddle and just shake them about after 10-15 mins.

Damn I was just about to come on here saying that I must have boiled them too much as they broke up when I tried it just 30 mins ago.

I'll try and remove the paddle and give it another go tomorrow.
Off to the chippy now cos I fancy some chips now hahaha
