Hey,

I just received this and plumbed it into machine using a PCIe socket.......y'know, the small ones.

I plugged in a molex as required, installed both the included and then online drivers but nothing.

I am supposed to see the words "NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller" under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in device manager but no.

Nothing

Any thoughts?

Are these wee cards ****? COuld it be dead?

Tried that a few times........drnothing at all.

There is power there i.e. an HDD will spin up but do nothing etc.

What HDD are you plugging in?

I assume it's in some sort of enclosure.

A 2.5" drive can be powered from the USB port but a 3.5" drive requires an external power supply.

Just to be clear.......flash drive, 2.5" portable drive, usb mouse...............none work.

The USB 3 chipset isnt showing in my device list at all.

The device list is excatly the same whether the card is installed and powered or not.

Surely thats a fault?

Shut down the PC.

Remove the card.

Start the PC and then shut down again.

Fit the card and start the PC again.

If the card isn't recognised it's likely knackered.

Edit:

Try it in a different PCI-E slot if you have one. You can use any size PCI-E slot.

Could be a long shot but try updating your chipset drivers for your motherboard, if that doesn't work consider updating your bios.

A friend of mine bought an Asus Xonar PCI-E x1 card and that didn't work until he updated his bios.

If not check PCI-E x1 settings in bios, if the above doesn't work then the unit is most likely faulty - unless of course the molex connection isnt quite met or the card isnt quite sat correctly.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the input.

I removed and refitted the card several times, restarting in between etc.

I tried 2 of the 3 PCI-E x1 slots (one is covered by the GTX275) and was making sure the card was seated correctly each time.

I tried several different molexes (all of which i know work)

Chipset drivers are bang up to date, well.....as far as the mobo is concerned.

BIOS is the very latest......again, circa 2009/2010 as its an old board.

Had a quick scout through the BIOS for PCI specific stuff but didnt see anything, what should i be looking for?

In my opinion, this should have been a very simple plug and play operation, which it wasnt so I am going to initiate an RMA today.

Thanks team

Andy

Sorry again, just to clarify.......my chipset is as up to date as it can be from the Gigabyte website.....that is version 9.1.2.1007 from 2010.

However, the Intel site shows a 9.2.0.1030 driver for the P31 chipset.

Should I be using this rather than depending on the Gigabyte site?

Andy

I only have 1 PCIx8 where my gfx card lives.......the rest are PCIx1 so I cant really.

I have tried it in 2 of the 3 PCIx1 slots though with no difference

RMA received, I have found that I have a PCI x1 slot in my work pc so ill test it here tomorrow to rule out my mobo etc before returning.

Hmmm,

Ok, glad I did this check before I got stung for the RMA/non-faulty fee.

I tried the card in my work machine and it worked just fine. The machine is a SFF Dell Optiplex so required some SERIOUS jiggery pokery to get the card in but once in, it complained about having no drivers as expected but once I ran the Akasa software, the "USB 3.0" bits and bobs appeared in the device manager and I was able to use the USB ports.

Updating the chipset sowftare last night on my Mobo made no difference at all.

So what does this mean?

Is my motherboard broken?

Really need some help here guys as I cannot RMA an item that isnt broken.

Anyone know if i can return it anyway?

What else can I look at on my motherboard?

The only other thing I can think of is pulling the OC off the system.

Could my OC be affecting the PCIe x1 ports?

In the BIOS, if i change the "PCI Frequency" entry from "Auto" to "100" which should be the default, the system wont boot and resets the BIOS to default.

Help!

Andy

Is the motherboard the same one as your sig?

Are you using the latest 'Intel INF installation' driver from Gigabyte site, the latest version being
9.1.2.1007.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2615#driver

Had a problem a while back with usb on a board, updating INF driver solved the problem, it a long shot but worth looking at,as the INF driver tells Windows about pci-e, usb, etc.

Yes buddy......still the ol' Gigabyte. OC is still 400 x 9 (old school i know, none of this fancy Core ix malarkey)

Thing is, computer works fine, well.....the front usb pinouts seem to not be working, but i dont use them anyhoo.

Did you install the drivers off the disk when you installed W7 64, or direct from the Gigabyte site.

Just dug out the manual for the board, go to page 44, look at PCI IRQ Assignment, try disabling them if you don't use them see what happens.

Also if you don't use serial port, parallel port, then disable them, see page 41

Set your PCI Express Frequency to 101 might stop default back to auto.
