After reading the thread about drinking in your lunch hour it got me thinking just how many people think they drink too much?

I know i do, but i don't smoke and try to keep healthy,

I have around 6 500ml-750ml cans/bottles of lager each night after work

I know this is excessive but it isn't as if i do it to hide away, I love my life and i just enjoy a drink after i finish work, it doesn't get me drunk

My girlfriend at the moment says i drink too much as i have put on half a stone in the last year,

So although i know it sounds a lot, it does sound reasonable to me after working all day.

Anyone else drink every night after work but doesn't feel like it affects their life?

Working all day is no excuse to be drinking so much, you say you try too keep healthy but alcohol contains as much calories as fat. Bit contrary. If you wana keep drinking that much, exercise more otherwise you'll just keep piling on the pounds

I used to be in a course where it was the norm to drink far too much. You're talking well into the 50's or 60's units per week (male = 21, woman = 14 recommended units per week).

I do excercise, i cycle at least 6 miles a day and am currently deciding which gym to join

The last time I drank alcohol was in February, had a weee tiny bit too much!

Only drink on the rare occasion. Not the type to get smashed every weekend.

Weight gain could also be down to your diet so it depends what that's like. But I'd agree that a six pack a day sounds a bit excessive.

Used to have a couple after work each day, have stopped now, don't know why, it just kindof phased out over a week or two..
Makes those lunchtime pints/after work pub visit's much more enjoyable...
(And theres always a drop of red or a good single malt for home!)

Probubly the only person in this thread who thinks they dont drink enough.

In my final year at uni, but because of work load etc have bene out on the razz proper only twice since september. I dont drink at home ac its expensive, and basically just dont drink. I then come back home and a couple of cans with tea goes straight to my head!

basically ive gone from drinking lots, to drinking the odd decent bottle of cider now and then.

Don't know where you got 50-60 from?

Using the OP's figures it would be
86-129 units per week for Carling (4.1%)
109-163 units per week for Stella (5.2%)

I'd agree you could do with cutting back a bit. Sounds like a habit rather than anything else.

I go through phases where I drink at home while not doing much and it tends to turn into 3 a night. It then takes quite a bit of will power to break the habit.

At the moment I'm trying to only drink on nights when I do sport or while out out meeting people.

As good as the first beer tastes I never feel any better the next day for having had a few beers at home.

I used to have about 4 or 5 bottles of beer each evening, normally stella or budweiser, or whatever else was on offer that week :p Usually a bit more at the weekends though, and sometimes a bit of absinthe too. A year of that and I put on about a stone, since about 2 months ago I stopped drinking and joined a gym and I've lost the weight again in 2 months :D I don't think it was a problem as it wasn't something I couldn't control, although I was getting in to a habit of drinking and it was effecting my weight, they were my only concerns as there was no other effects I had.

Make your mind up :p

being home from uni over easter i have drank way to much as theres not much else to do really and at uni i'm a pretty big binge drinker. as for if its to much, i dont think it is but my parents keep telling me i need to stop. i just see it as getting drunk and having a laugh with friends

You're fooling yourself if you really think you're keeping healthy. You're drinking between 3 and 4.5 litres of lager every day within a period of a few hours. That's ~6-9 pints. That is not healthy. That's a drug habit. It's poisoning you.

I know this is excessive but it isn't as if i do it to hide away, I love my life and i just enjoy a drink after i finish work, it doesn't get me drunk

That should be worrying you. You are abusing a dangerous drug to such an extent that you have a high tolerance to it.

My girlfriend at the moment says i drink too much as i have put on half a stone in the last year,
I wouldn't worry about those 7 pounds. With your degree of alcohol use, you have more to worry about.

So although i know it sounds a lot, it does sound reasonable to me after working all day.

A couple of lines of coke sounds reasonable after working all day to some people.

Many alcoholics.

The recommended limits for a man are 21 units in a week and 4 units in a day. You're taking 12-18 units per day and between 60 and 126 units per week. Between 84 and 126 units if you drink every day, rather than 5 days a week. In other words, you're on about 4 times the recommended limits. You are harming yourself, no doubt about it. That's assuming 3-4% lager.

I never drink. I dont know what is is, maybe im just strange, but i never realy got a taste for alcohol. Beer and most strong drinks i just never realy liked (im guessing the more stronger flavour drinks like whisky and such is more of an aquired taste), but there is a couple drinks i do like, tequila and coffee liqures like kahlua.

Maybe if i would drink more beer, or find a decent one that doesnt taste like ****, i would enjoy drinking it. But the only time i would drink beer is if its a hot day, and im all out of cold diet coke.
