Alder Lake-S leaks

Why would that stop me from buying faster DDR5 later though? It's obviously going to overtake DDR4 at some point. Or are you saying you think DDR4 buyers will stay on DDR4 for the life of their LGA1700 CPU?

By the time DDR5 actually destroys DDR4, pricing on both the RAM and the boards would have normalised and you would have significantly overpaid for both components for realising a minor gain, in a best case scenario and maybe even lower FPS in a worst case. On top of that, those who went DDR4 on Alder Lake and then go DDR5 for AM5 (which would be cheaper at that point) would have spent equivalent amounts to what you paid and get faster performance and a more future proof socket.

Again this entirely hinges on how that Crucial RAM compares to a top spec DDR4 kit. For all we know it could be equivalent for a lower price.

I certainly wouldn’t be buying LGA 1700 for its upgradability. A large part of Intel strategy is to sell CPU’s along with a chipset.

Sat here on a 6pack delidded 8700k @ 5.1 on all 6 cores not knowing what to do.....
It really depends on what you do with your system. If you're like me and use it for lots of tasks other than gaming that are single thread and multi thread intensive then, you're probably going to see some nice improvements so the gamble shouldn't have too much risk involved; notwithstanding, the usual early adopter issues.

If on the other hand you only game at 2K HQ+ then I would definitely wait for reviews to see exactly what kind of improvements are to be had.

I'm purely gaming at a high res 3840*1600 UW and have a 3090 powering it, my 8700k feels so old on a REV1 motherboard as well, got hand in pocket syndrome. I really should wait, I can't help but feel my card is held back slightly.

Reviews are only two days away, either way if ADL isn't better at gaming than RTL, CFL or Ryzen 5000 those most defiantly are and they might be discounted soon.

Scratch that i have 6700K on my mind, sorry... an 8700K is still a pretty potent CPU for gaming. CFL isn't going to be much better, same for RTL, Ryzen 5000 also isn't hugely better but it is the best you can get right now.

So it all depends on ADL gaming performance, i would wait for reviews, remember the hype around RTL and how that turned out....

Can't speak for other people's usecases but from interacting with you in the past and what you do, you'll be a very happy person!

I'm still tempted by a 5800x and b550 board, 2 days will tell.

Also a mega deal on a 11700k elsewhere at the moment.

Trying so hard not to either pre order a 12600kf and ddr4 board £470
11700k and z690 board £431
5800x b550 board £425

Ps running a 10400f b560 at the moment

For the same money the 5800X has it by a mile over the 11700K, the latter is just not as good at gaming and its a power hog.

Oh I'm pretty sure I would but I've done my 'early adopter service' years ago and I've vowed never to do it again! With AL there are even more variables to iron out, not just the early bios' to fix. There's the DDR4/5, Windows 10/11 scheduler, the P or E cores etc.

I'm sitting this one out with popcorn in hand until the dust settles. ;)

When you clever lot work out which one is best for gaming, can you tell me what to buy please.

All too complex for my fragile little mind. :(

@beasty6 11700K vs 5800X, I'm also adding Serious Sam 4 because its very heavy on the CPU and they didn't include it on this chart for some reason.

ADL really needs to gain about 15% overall to match Zen 3, and it very well could surpass that, but we should wait, its 2 days.

PS: GPU bound games are just that, a GPU benchmark. a faster CPU will not show up in those.

Hey housey, everything hinges on the performance of the little cores, but using the little cores effectively depends on the operating system, graphics card and game.

Lot of stars need to align and I can see a lot issues. Much beta testing to be done.

Want an easy life, buy a 5900X, X570S board and some 3600 cas 16 RAM. Alderlake looks like 6 months plus of beta testing and lots of broken.

There's a screenshot floating around with Intel telling people to disable the e-cores for better gaming performance and lower power consumption. Seems a little unlikely given how much they've been bigging up the new scheduler. If this is true, gaming may be as good on Win10 as it is 11.

Interesting stuff, thanks, I also record and stream while gaming, so in theory the E cores should run the streaming apps etc
The 5800x is still very much a strong contender, especially with the cheap b550 boards at the moment, also I'm gaming at 1440p with a rtx 3070ti

Complete speculation statement though surely as nothing about this statement has any foundation?

On the contrary those reviewers who are active on Twitter etc are hinting at the exact opposite but cannot say any more due to the embargo.
