Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed......

Wasn't it Mr Clarkson who once said "you're not a good driver untill you've owned an Alfa Romeo".

Personally I love the look of the 156, it's got to be one of the classest places to be sitting. As for the driving experience - never actually driven one, but Clarkson can't be wrong can he!

i think it was something along the lines of "youve not lived until youve..." or possibly "you havent had a nightmare until youve"... lol :p

Honestly this thread is hilarious, it has everything, people saying Alfas are super reliable, people saying they are not, people getting criticised for saying that and then people coming in saying 'omfg my 53 reg Alfa is making horrid noises..'.

No one in this thread has claimed Alfas are super reliable. We have all given an honest account as owners what ours have cost us. Chris should make his own mind up from what he has read and after this thread you can say he is not going in blind folded.

Alfa ownership is not all plan sailing and you need to take care of them. If you are the kind of person at complains at every rattle niggle and bulb blowing please do us a favour, and spend twice as much on buying a BMW.

Lets set the record straight, my fathers 18 month old TDCI Mondeo has been recovered twice and he has just learned that the Ford auto box can give up at anything past 60k. You don't find me on this forum slagging off Mondeos everytime it has a minor failure. Every car has its weakness

Don't worry - I intend to. But that was really my point - Alfas are pure enthusiasts car, if you don't have the time and money to pour into keeping one going, do not bother.

If you DO have the time and money to keep it on the road, you'll be rewarded, but it's not for people on a budget. And IMHO, if you are spending £2500 or less on a car, you are on a budget... one which doesn't lend itself to Alfa ownership.

No, slagging off Automatic Mondeos is my job, becuase they are gash and their slagging is justified :p

Not necessarily - I only spent £1900 on my car. I could have easily spent £10K in cash but I prefer to buy cheap (but well looked after) and then spend on regular servicing which works out a hell of a lot cheaper than the depreciation on newer cars.

If however you are struggling to stretch to £2500 and will struggle to afford the service intervals then you shouldnt be buying any £2500 car. You should be buying something for £1500.

Thank you I would never suggest to anyone these cars are "budget". I quote dealership cost which should be taken at worst.

If you do mileage etc ignore them they will probably cost you a bomb. However if you want something a little different and fun these are defiantly worth a look.

You also get two kinds of unique engineering:

1. Twin Spark engine, no one else has produced one for road use. The 18 year old design can still hold its own against todays engines.
2.The Selespeed was designed by Ferrari and used by Alfa. This is a true Semi-Automatic and not oftenly mistaken as a Tiptronic.

twin spark... two spark plugs per cylinder? iirc mercedes have often used it and i think a few 911s have had it.

can you show me some details to confirm that the selespeed is actually a semi auto? woulda thought it was just an auto with a manual override
