The Nostromo was diverted to LV426 to investigate and potentially bring back a lifeform.
Alien Prequel I assume would be Weyland Yutani send a manned semi-armed probe to LV426 having picked up a signal on long range scanners. The ship arrives, find the beacon, get infected, realises they are in the poop, fight the Alien and no one surives.
WY lose contact but know that the Nostromo is in the area so divert the Nostromo to LV426. The assumption being that the Nostromo crew wouldn't put up much of a fight so the likelyhood of a specimen being brought back is much higher than sending the Marines.
This was discussed a little while ago.
If theres a queen, it would be interesting to see if they explore the phsycic ability of her over her brood.
Crashed on, or was crashed.
If they set up a warning beacon, it's not too big a step for them to have tried to ensure the ship wasn't going to be a random danger, crashing it into a dead planet would be a good way of doing that.
But as you say, the "warning signal" is, I beleive fairly canon.
It'll be interesting to see what the prequel is like, especially having one of the original directors doing it.
Not sure about that mate, the Company didnt seen in the Nostromo, they picked up a distress beacon whilst travelling back to Earth, it was a chance encounter with the alien ship.
