Aliens calling? Signals detected from beyond Solar System

The scientists' graph has just been released to the press...

Aliens? Where the bloody hell did that crap come from? This is one of those rare cases where I feel expletives are needed, but I'll refrain as I value my account.

Yes, this is complete and utter unfounded and uneducated BS. Let's nip this one in the bud shall we. Not every extraterrestrial radio source is 'aliens calling'. Natural radio sources are indeed very common. Anything from pulsars to our very own planet Earth emit natural radio signals. This has absolutely sod all to do with full disclosure or little green (or grey) men.

Let's go back to the source, shall we:

DUT Indlebe Radio Telescope Sees First Light

On the evening of 28th July 2008, at 21h14 local time the Indlebe Radio Telescope, situated on the Steve Biko campus of the Durban University of Technology, successfully detected its first radio source from beyond the solar system. A strong source was detected from Sagittarius A, the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy, approximately 30 thousand light years away.

It should be noted that this is not an intelligent source, i.e. it is not a source that could be considered as having been transmitted by alien intelligence. Furthermore, it is certainly not a new discovery. The electromagnetic radiation emanating from Sagittarius A is well documented and an entirely natural phenomenon. A similar signal, although of a much larger magnitude, would be received by simply pointing the telescope at the Sun.

To the OP. I have no problem with you believing in aliens, the illuminati, lizardmen, or whatever else it is you believe in this week. But please, before you start spouting this sort of nonsense, check your sources. Otherwise it just makes you look like a fool.

Possibly, but they would have accounted for that or would have detected them as soon as the project began.
OMG. The truth really is out there. The project has just begun and they have detected them. Call the X-files.

Why is everyone so negative? Isn't this a pretty big deal if it is confirmed?

What exactly does a radio signal consist of? Would it be just like receiving a radio signal in the car, so it would just be a normal sound. Or would we only get graphs and stuff from it? (boring)

There are many many natural sources of radio waves in the universe and we've been listening to them for a long time. If you hooked up the telescope to a speaker to us it would just sound like a static noise, like if you listen to the radio without it being tuned in.

Radio waves can be used to create images, just like the light we see is. What we refer to as light and radio waves are effectively the same thing, if you want to learn more about that google electro magnetic spectrum and you should find a lot of information, and there should be a lot of pages that are written in an easy to understand way (i.e. you won't need to have a PhD in Physics to understand it :) )

As an example the following is an image of our sun (with solar flare!) created by nasa using data collected from a radio telescope, as you can see it's not just graphs and stuff!

EDIT: Here's another good one, it's of the centre of our galaxy, the arrow is just pointing at the leftovers of a supernova (large star explosion):

I swear that signal was from a massive huge fracker missile or a bomb fired from a mothership and we're all screwed either that or its a freak of nature that signal

Cool, thanks for the explanation :)

I thnk we're starting to move towards full disclosure and this is could be part of the de-sensitisation process.

Even if the detection appears to be like nothing we've ever detected before it doesn't mean proof of aliens. It just means that we're looking at something we've not seen before and since the Universe is pretty big then this isn't something particularly unusual.

One of the stories I quite liked is that the first time gamma ray bursts were observed they calculated the energy that must have been released and it was more massive then the sum energy of the galaxy! Then when they realised the beams were focused and not spreading out radially (hence energy requirements much less) it was considered briefly by a couple of people that we were witnessing an interstellar war.

There has already been a signal detection picked up by SETI which I believe has not yet been explained, it's known as the WOW signal, i'm sure you've heard of it. This was disclosed many years ago.

Case closed, then.

ow lets get back to more pictures from radio telescopes :D

Yep - as I have just said in the other thread. The first pulsar was originally called "LGM-1" for "Little Green Men" as a joke. At the time, there was no explanation for the physics taking place - but these are now routine. There are that many physical processes occurring in the Universe which produce emission in the EM spectrum and there are probably lots we do not know or understand that going for the aliens argument is probably, one of the last explanations to use..

IMHO I think that it is incredibly arrogant to assume that we are alone in the Universe, however, I do not think that there is any evidence for aliens, despite the dodgy photos across the internet.

Sigh just sigh
