Alienware area 51

mate had an alienware, it went wrong, it took them six months to get him a working pc again...

Did he get his Alienware repaired or did he refund then build a new PC?
Also, apart from being overpriced all my friends have had good experiences with Alienware.

theres overpriced, and theres alienware. overclockers have great customer service, especially on the forums. how they put up with me in the CS section i really dont know :p

*edit*
you can get a better performing prebuilt pre overclocked PC with exactly the same warranty and exactly the same extras for under half the price of the alienware

if you can build it yourself, go with this, but put in a cheapy DVD RW SATA drive and the thermalright silver arrow.

also, if you have no plans to watercool the computer then the silverstone raven 3 would be a great case.

Shocked by this!

@buzzlightweight you can't be serious with recommendations like that

pah, thats nothing. ive finally found their i5 2500k setup (their cheapest rig, who knew) and the memory prices are beyond belief

alienware Aurora RAM prices said:
1333MHz Memory
3072MB (3x1GB) 1333MHz DDR3 Memory [Included in Price]
4GB 1333MHz (2x2GB) Dual Channel Memory [add £40.00 or £2/month]
6GB 1333MHz (2x2GB + 2x1GB) Dual Channel Memory [add £90.00 or £4/month]
8192MB (4x2GB) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Memory [add £120.00 or £6/month]
16GB 1333MHz (4x4GB) Dual Channel Memory [add £360.00 or £18/month]

i'm actually lost for words

*edit*
overclockers can offer 8192MB (4x2GB) 2133MHz DDR3 Dual Channel for £119.98. how the hell are alienware charging over 8x more than this?

Am I actually missing something with the Alienware Kit..It is JUST the name isn't it? I seemed to recall back in the day they were known for extremely high spec system builds..but over time they've just seemed to become even more over priced

Alienware are just a gimmick, I bought one 5 year ago and spent a fair bit of money on it. I could have gotten an equally same spec rig for near half the price. It's stuck in the corner of the bedroom now. I really don't rate their cases either. The only very impressive thing about them is the wire management, seriously seriously tidy!

Which doesn't make it run any better of course ;]

I used to like the idea of them...when I was a lot younger..but now I prefer something a little more streamlined as opposed to something that looks like it would have put up a reasonable fight in Robot Wars!

I admit Alienwares do look awesome. Their cases and stying is awesome. But their performance can be beaten quite easily with machines costing significantly less.

Its like like fashion and clothes, you pay more for the name...

That Alienware system seems crap, unbelievably over priced!!

Alienware systems are not crap. They are indeed priced grossly above the cost of buying and assembling a computer yourself. However, Alienware is out to make a profit and only a very small niche group of computer-enthusiasts are willing to spend the time researching and effort to assemble their computer.

Furthermore, Alienware advertises itself to affluent gamers. This group would rather pay a premium - however large it is - and receive a guaranteed functional rig than deal with the potential issues that may arise if they assembled their own rig.

That's what the OcUK store is for isn't it? =D *edit* for the quality of the CS. Your prices are excellent of course!

OCUK prebuilt products are superb. However, the affluent gamer group I cited earlier will buy alienware products over OCUK products for two main reasons:

1) OCUK does not spend the same amount of money on advertising as Dell does on their Alienware range.
The affluent gamer group I cited earlier may not be exposed to OCUK's products simply because they do not see any adverts for their products.

2) These affluent gamers want the prestige of a branded alienware laptop and will pay out of the bum to get it.

Both of these are great ideas :)

To the OP, go with what he said about my build, although personally I'd probably pick one of the Corsair H series coolers (H80 probably) with the cheaper DVD RW SATA and Raven 3. Case is obviously all about personal preference though!

ofc. This was nothing more than light hearted banter. I can completely understand the desire for less hassle. Having an annoyingly large amount of work, both personal ventures and professional stuff for my proper job I don't have the time to tinker with the inner workings of it..and these days I don't really want to.

The other thing of course is that having an Alienware computer is a gamer fashion statement isn't it... It creates an image for the person that has the money to splash on the name - hence the previously mentioned paying out of the bum for it.

No justification for that, totally shocking how they make people pay £1k more for 8gigs of 2133MHz ram and get away with it. Sickened for the people who actually buy it!
