The film from director Edward Berger is based on the world renowned bestseller of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque.

Kermode's review was good and he said it was worth watching on the big screen. Pity my other half would never be persuaded to watch a war film, to this day she refuses to watch any of Saving Private Ryan

Without remembering the character names it's the bit where the wimpy guy essentially watches his mate get killed when he likely could've saved him.

Just got back from the cinema after watching this, absolutely fantastic. I took Kermodes advice and travelled to see it on the big screen, glad I did.

I cant remember having seen any of the previous versions of this, but this is a great adaptation. I loved the musical score, it really instilled a bleak and ominous feeling throughout. It's about 2.5 hrs, it felt longer! But not in a bad way, just that it was so intense you are just absorbed into it.

Everyone in the cinema was just silent and didnt move for a while when it finished.

Very powerful and highly recommended 8.5 / 10

That's the one I wasn't sure if I'd seen or not, but that was a remake too, the original was done in 1930!

Yes, black and white film, saw it once a very long time ago, very good as I recall

I went up to the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield, which was the closest to me. Looks like they only had it on last week though.
