Its not really philanthropic, its trying to increase the size of the market they are operating in, turn their standards into industry standards and increasing the amount of suppliers and people who are familiar with their technologies - making growth easier for them. All the while preventing other companies making money from their research.

Its a potentially very smart business move, the fact that its also good PR is just a bonus.
