Yea.. That's toast!
Look at the damage behind the pulling cable structure :o

And lighter damage to the stern area.

Clearly I'm no marine salvage expert, but haven't they just flooded the entire bottom half of the ship now, where previously it was less damaged? But that sunk side, look at the state of it, they were never going to salvage and re-fit it were they.

Good job getting it upright in one piece though, engineering is excellent!

The intention was never to refit it, its going to be broken down for scrap. The flooding was unavoidable but actually helps it to sit on the huge base that they built underneath it. It will sit there like that now until late next spring / early summer whilst they attach the additional steel tanks to the damages sides and wait out the bad winter tides.

Then all going well they will fill the tanks with air to float the thing and tow it to an Italian dock to be broken down.

Fair enough, thanks for the info - wonder if they cleared the cabins of the passengers personal belongings on the port side before pulling it over and flooding them - suppose it was probably low down on the list of priorities.... When they fill the tanks with air, will the pump out the hull? They surely can't lift it that full of seawater?

I believe divers will be going to all the cabins whilst it sat there to try and find the last two bodies and as much personal stuff as they can, they might even go in the bridge and find evidence against the captain.

I presume they'll pump some of the hull out, but they won't be trying to float it back to its old level just enough so its off the seabed and has enough clearance to get to the dock to be broken up !

To my eyes, the damage looks fairly cosmetic. It's only really the walkways that make it look so bad, and probably helped protect the real structure of the ship. I haven't seen a shot that shows the depth of the damage to the side yet though.

Awesome job of getting it upright :-) Bet there was hell of a lot of water shifting about inside that thing as it was raised.

If you search online i'm sure you can find it easily enough to download, if ya catch my drift ;)
