Alpha Protocol

I can't go near a game that comes out without any form of reviews.

As worthless as most reviews are these days, if a publisher sneaks their game out it's often a sign it smells of poo and they know it.

A shame as this was one of my most wanted games this year, and to find out I can buy it already without it having any kind of fanfare at all means I'm not going near it for a while.

I learned my lesson in 2008 when I bought Alone In The Dark (The Collector's Edition! Argh!)

I vowed to never agin buy without reviews. (The previews in PC Gamer and PC Zone had all been so good! At least PC Zone apologised, later). It's still in its box unopened and unloved.

I have played for half an hour or so and I can safely say this is one of the worst games I have played for years. I advise everyone to stay away.

^^I don't really understand what lesson you've learnt there - you've never opened the box to play the game yet have written it off on the basis of some reviews?

Were not talking a little bit of a difference though mate were talking 6/5 out of 10's etc. If it fails to work/engage even on a basic level I don't think its going to matter how much you like the genre/concept.

Juat gave it a blast after play sloted it through my door, Could not even get past the start. Feels like a game that needs more work. Might be better on ps3 or xbox but i will never find out :P

To be fair on metacritic so far it is rating 74% and Eurogamer gave it a 7/10. From the review it seems to be a flawed game, but not fataly flawed and worth persevering with. I will probably wait till it gets a discount on Steam and get it then.

Few people i know who played it have said one of the worst storylines ever and gameplay is lackluster at best.

They would advise to give this one a miss.

Combat is awful, graphics are dated, storyline is disjointed and poorly written, voice acting is sub par, interface is very unintuitive and the dialogue and level up systems feel ripped directly from ME1/2. Give it a miss. That is all.

The graphics and gameplay are shocking for such a company no idea what went wrong but something is clearly amiss at obsidian here.
Sorry but this game doesn't deserve anywhere near 7/10 more like 4/10 it's that bad.

Strange but, apart from the (frankly terrible) hacking mini game, im enjoying this, feels kind of like a modern day mass effect, upgrading weapons is fun too.

At the eight-hour mark, if you've persevered, you may well have had time to come to terms with all that. If you accept Alpha Protocol as a project made by a plucky team working to a faintly cruel budget, it's surprisingly hard not to get behind it.

...

With ambition instead of budget, and integrity instead of polish, in the end the choice of whether to persevere or not is pretty easy to make.

It would be interesting to know what happened behind the scenes with Sega and Obsidian...

Thats way too harsh.

I'm about 6 hours and enjoying the game, it has its flaws sure. The game itself reminds me a hell of a lot of Mass Effect 1.

Graphics really aren't that bad imo, and the story is really quite involving and I haven't found it disjointed at all.

Just remember it isn't a shooter but an RPG, points into your character make a big difference.

It isn't a classic by any means (though it could have been) but its definitely a solid 7.0-7.5 game.

Edit: Actually forget the Mass Effect comparison, its more like Vampire Masquerade:Bloodlines, so if you dig that you will definitely dig this.
