Alpha Protocol

Yeah, I've got a bunch of unplayed games too (Steam sales again, but also a bunch of console games - had Zelda for the Wii over 3 years now and still haven't unwrapped it!).

Thing is I've got the desire to play pretty much all my games at least once, I just never seem to get the time. Could really do with getting made redundant...

This aint a game to want to be redundant for!
The story seems fun so far but ME1 or 2 it aint.
For one that damn mouse glitching is going to make me scream.

haha. I know exactly what you mean. I have tons of games I just never get time to play. At my current purchase rate I could retire at 35 and still not get around to playing everything

Well I was really looking forward to this, then the so-so reviews came out and it put me off. Then when Games (tm) rated it highly 8/10 and knowing I liked the idea I bought it. I've only played an hour but so far love it, reminds me of Deus Ex, the best game of all time :D.

No demo as far as I'm aware.

Finished the game though, which is unusual for me to complete anything these days. That must mean something.

Just don't let the hacking mini game put you off if you do go for it :)

Great game.

Works perfectly, has pretty graphics, horrible animations.
But gameplay is fun, dialoges and story and choices and consequences are where it really shines. There are not many games like that on the market.

Well said, I agree completely. Picked it up off Steam yesterday and haven't played anything else yet, it's a strange mix of rpg, shooter and stealth - but it works well and the missions I've been through have all been fun if a little stressful at times, hehe!

I'm quite far in now and I'm amazed how good this game is. Not quite Deus Ex but closer to it than anything I've ever played since. This is most likely going to be my GOTY unless it falls apart in the second half. Gutted it won't sell enough to get some DLC though.

Just completed this game. I am glad I bought it, easily worth a fiver.

I was swayed by bit-techs second review:

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/pc/2010/10/16/revisiting-alpha-protocol/1

The plot is fairly decent as computer games go. I like the dialogue system, it is similar to mass effect but there is a timer so you have to decide your choice quickly. This is good becasue it encourages you to make instinctive replies, and what you say in a conversation can have long term repercussions. There are a lot of points that you are called upon to make a quick decision which can have far reaching effects on the plot. E.g there are several characters you can choose to kill or become buddies with. I thought the voice acting was also decent.

IT is clearly lacking a bit of polish. For example the shooting mechanism can be a bit frustrating. It takes too long to target your shots. Some of the skills you could developm seem unecssary e.g I could break all locks, hack computers and alarms right through to the end without ever developing skills in this category. Personally I think if it had been given a couple months longer in QA, then the average review score could have been upped 10-15%.
I feel a bit sorry for the developers as it is clear that a lot of work was put into the game. It went past too many deadlines and sega pushed them to releasing it, when it wasnt perfect and possibly shot themselves in the foot as mediocre reviews = poor sales.
I would give it 79% or 8/10, as despite it flaws it was a fun game.

Completed this shortly after I purchased in the Christmas steam sales. Was absolutely worth a fiver. It received overly harsh reviews and I was surprised by how good it actually was. Would certainly recommend this one. Real shame there won't be a sequel.

Rented it, worst game I've played in a loooooooooong time. Hated the controls and gameplay but it had a lot of potential.

Rented it suggests it was on a console?

I played this on PC and really enjoyed it. I wouldn't go overboard and say it was worth £20 but for a fiver it's well worth a play. It had a really good and interesting story line (and for a change no ****** aliens). Although the RPG side was very slim I still finished it. I can't say that for every game I have played.

Playing this at the moment. Isn't the control system such a pile of crap? Yet again a promising game damaged by being dumbed down for the console kiddies.

Just bought this while it was on offer and I'm glad I didn't spend more than £3.50 on it. It markets itself as an espionage RPG, implies a stealth element, and yet the horrendous AI makes it next to impossible to remain undetected. It turns every mission into a shoot-out, which is made even worse by the terrible controls and awful aiming which takes a decade to gain any accuracy. In other cases the AI is happy to sprint at you until you take them out with a melee attack. While it is pretty in some areas, the animations, particularly of enemies, are some of the worst I've seen. Unless you're very strongly into the RPG element, which I can understand is one of this games' strengths, I'd avoid it if you're looking for a stealth-em-up that's not Splinter Cell.

So I just started am I best leveling up and playing as a stealth agent or as a run and gunner.

What skills best to level up?

For me so far it seems stealth is pretty poorly implemented and the aim off guns is ridiculous so I dont know what to level up or how to go about playing it
