Alpine headunits - any good?

Generally they were always considered to be the best mainstream HU's when I was more into ICE, but that was some time ago.

yeah, very minimal on specs but they had the best sound out of the box and so didnt need any special wizardry to get it sounding better.

The one i'm bidding on is 40w output is thit OK? I was told i should look for 50, but i'm not really going to be blasting stuff out! I just want somrthing better than the normal citroen unit in my ZX

yes that should be fine, and Apline make very very good stuff

I replaced my rubbish blaupunkt hu in the Elise with an Alpine 9850ri which I managed to pick up for £100. The difference was night and day and convinced me that the speakers in the car are fine! I can hear the radio at 80 with the roof off now!

I find them a little bright for MP3's, i replaced mine with a Pioneer 77mp, quite possibily HU i ever had, now i have a JVC avx33 DVD unit, nowhere near in terms of SQ, but not bad, but at least i can watch a film or two, and have all my music collection on a dvd or usb drive.

Alpine are the less show and more go end of the market where all but one model pretty much run this philosophy. Pioneer on sound terms are pretty much on par. But their less showy units are very high spec and cost a packet.

So if it's function over form with some change for food that month, it's gotta be Alpine :)

That'll be 40w PMPO, equates to about 14w RMS @ 12v IIRC.

There are some very interesting threads on TalkAudio about power figures, haven't been on there for sometime now and am starting to forget things :(

I like Alpine stuff, especially their amplifiers. I've got a Pioneer P80-MP head unit and like that too. Not sure what I'll get next but it'll be one of those two brands.

I have a Pioneer P77MP in my Peugeot. Acclaimed the best sounding Headunit in its class when it was new. I paid £170 for it second had when they are £400 new. One of those simple but expensive units. Had it for 3 years or so I think, brilliant unit.

I was actually going to get the P77, love its looks so much. When a mate was selling his BMW (to which I'd fitted the P80) he offered the headunit to me for £140.

He'd paid £280 just 12 months earlier so how could I refuse. I had a Pioneer DEH-P3600MP previously but the P80 is just miles ahead. I love the EQ features and the LP filter is just superb.

I've had Pioneer(twice), Sony, and now Alpine... If I ever buy a head unit again it will be a Alpine! :)

Fantastic headunits imo - i put an alpine headunit and infinity speakers in my Ford Escort and few years ago and now wouldn't look to buy any other make.

Still got the car, though the stereo and speakers are probably worth more than the car itself now :p
