Want a laptop for gaming and watching blurays ...

Ideally I want an 18 inch screen, but those seem rarer than rocking horse poo these days (I remember there being 20inch ones before... someone bring them back!)... Full HD.
Got to be capable of playing the current crop of games on at least mostly good detail...

And ideally cheaper than an Alienware

There is basically no market for 20 inch laptops any more. No-one is carrying around something that huge and in that case, an all-in one desktop system would be more suitable.

Yeah, but I cant use an all in one desktop on my lap when I'm laying about in bed

I know they wont do a 20inch laptop again, but I can lament the sad passing of the uber-laptop

Ooh, they do a 18" one... only a GTX560 though hmmm

Of course, as Alienware were so pricey I did think about building an mITX system that could do blurays and internet-ing that would fit in one of those cases meant to be put on the back of monitors and then bolt the whole thing together on a wall-mount arm thing and mount it on the wall next to the bed... just thought a laptop would be easiest... hmm many thinkings to do

Search google uk for vortex 3. It's a clevo chassis, can custom build them with whatever spec u want, with the latest gpu's.

Oh that's much better priced! And given that it's just a "laptop" shape rather than some fancy design they probably wont have opted for a slot-loading optical drive which was something putting me off Alienware - used to have a slot loading stereo at work once and all the shop CDs were scuffed around the edge where the wheel had rubbed little marks onto them.

Hmm

I have the 15" version, with a 6990m, i7 etc... They do look discrete, mine is my work laptop, nobody realises its a gaming machine. Oh and they have a normal cd tray drive.

When i was looking for an 18", the m18x was the cheapest I could find (used a discount code). Also you could look on the dell outlet, there are normally a few m18x on at very low prices.

If you want to have it on you lap you may prefer something smaller, 18" laptops are quite heavy.

Asus or MSI would be alienware price beaters for performance.

Asus or MSI prices are very close to m17x prices. In some cases the m17x is cheaper. The thing that pushes the price up to mad levels with the Alienware laptops is RAM and Hard drive upgrade options. If you are OK with doing the RAM/Hard drive upgrade yourself then it is a lot cheaper this way. Also there are discount code all over the net so it easy to save 15%, sometimes 25%.

MSI, Asus, Samsung ect ect. Whilst they do do (hehe) very good laptops and are very well known companies, if you're going to buy a laptop for gaming pick up a Clevo machine. Just do it (Vortex III)
I say this mainly from a price point and secondly from an upgradability point. Older Clevo machines can run the latests GPU's without any problems, this cant be said for the majority of the big name companies

For example, take my old Toshiba x300, I was planning on upgrading the GPU the other month till I realised they used a specific GPU that only x300 models used...
