Am I being 'tight' not wanting to share my broadband with a mate?

Saw this on Sickipedia today, made me think of this thread haha.

Both my next door neighbours have been arrested as part of the European-wide raids against online paedophiles.

**** knows where I'm going to get my free wi-fi now.

I thought for a second you were living together, if he's an old friend and a neighbour then no unless you're feeling charitable or he wants to pay towards it, even then limit bandwidth but it's not something he should ask for in the first place.

His background story really wasn't necessary, unless he pays or contributes each month I would let him share it. BB packages can be fairly cheap but you've paid for the line to be installed and probably an activation fee which he hasn't given you a tap for.

So in short no.

Friend down on his luck, wants basic internet access that the OP would possibly not even notice, which is hardly comparable to living rent free. Life isn't black and white, I really hope when you're down on luck that people offer you such a welcoming hand.

Its £15 a month, his mate will save that if he stops smoking easily - £6 a pack arnt they.

Plus he will have less chance of getting cancer!

Was it lung or smoking related OP?

Not a chance in hell, especially with a 80gb cap.....People keep saying he wants basic internet access, have they missed the part where he wants to stream skytv & download the odd film?

Yeah, i wouldn't give him access if he was streaming sky and downloading movies, 80GB is easy enough to use alone, let alone with 2 people using it.

He needs to understand your broadband is not just another 'white goods' and that you love it, hug it and kiss it.

You wouldn't expect to share his 'smoke' for free or even share it at all.

I'd share.

This thread throws up the fact that for a lot of people on here their internet connection is the only thing they've got going for them.

£30 a month? Seems expensive.

Can you get Sky? I pay £15 for unlimited + line rental to BT.

Yeah, ridiculous until there's a knock on the door or a letter enquiring about YOUR copyright infringement or worse!

Why expose yourself to such risk?

I can only assume that, as you seem to be ok with it, your own Access Point is freely available to all of your neighbours and anyone driving past?

I was saying it's ridiculous assuming that's the first thing he'd do. Plus, as I've said, nothing will come of simple copyright infringement. You can download what you want all day and as long as you're/they're not uploading you won't be liable for anything.

Great, so you're potentially liable for his acts of piracy! :/

As above, there isn't really any liability when it comes to acts of piracy, this is something a lot of people either refuse to accept, completely ignore or just forget. If you're not uploading, then you're not at risk of being liable for anything.

Devils advocate: He could be using legitimate and legal download services.

As above, "illegal" or legal it won't make any difference to liability unless you're "distributing".

I haven't posted in a while, didn't want to seem like I was ignoring the thread, had already decided what to to but the more I read the more I'm considering just telling him I'd rather not share or just give him access while I'm at work.

It is expensive and according to BT I'm on a very special rate, this thread spurred me on to ring BT and try to get my installation charge wavered but they say because I'm on a reduced rate they can't do it, I told them that even at the reduced rate I'm still paying more than their competitors for the same or better package, God knows how BT manage to charge so much and get away with it, I suppose it's because it's a household name.

Anyway I rang sky and they can give me truly unlimited internet and phone line rental for £22.50 a month and they are LLU enabled on my local exchange, plus, only £19 for installation, the only downside is though that I'll have to wait another month for an engineer but I'm thinking of leaving BT and going with sky now, plus it's only £57 to brake out of my BT contract.

I think if I was in the same situation I would let him use it on the understanding that if it impacted on the quality/speed of connection for you then he would have to get his own BB.

Lowrider...

Are you signing up to BT? If so, how about enabling BT FON on your router? He can then purchase access to the hotspot without causing you any hassle.

if you're getting BT create a sub account and enable BT Fon access, charge him a nominal fee for use of the sub account, it's limited to approx 512kb with a view of moving to 2mb,

This is all redside access so doesn't infringe on your usage and he has a 10k minute limit per month, if he goes over he then has to re log in every 30 mins.

I would'nt let him use it all.

You dont know what he may download and when the Police come knocking they are knocking at your door. Your not only letting him use your BB but your also letting everyone else use it in his flat. Could be a girlfriend, boyfriend or just some weird mates with a perverse sexual habits who like to look it up on your BB.

Your opening up yourself to too much risk.
