Am I being unfair? (work related)

His employer has only 'failed to provide suitable times' because he's decided to work another, seperate job which has made him unavailable at the times he usually worked.

Having a 6 hour contract doesn't mean you get to cherry pick only the very best shifts that totally fit your decision to work for somebody else.

Hence the suitable hours, unsuitable hours ie because his other job conflicts is nothing to do with the company. They are still doing what the contract states they will. Provide suitable hours as stated in the contract.

6 hours at minimum wage isn't worth the trouble, ditch it, get something else that better fits in with your other job and studies.

What would your boss say if you phoned him up and said you were not available next week?

Its a completely different situation if he's basically being treated like a 0 hour employee despite not having a proper 0 hour contract. Assuming he's actually marked himself available to fit some of the shifts, then the manager has no cause reacting like he did.

If you're thinking of this in terms of full time employment, you're basically thinking about it wrong.

If he's basically available most other times then what's the problem, sounds like he has a good availability. Probably just that from being one of I assume relatively few taking the hardest times to get someone for (I wouldn't want to be in that early, especially on a weekend), he is now saying he can't do those.

So despite the OP possibly from the sound of it being one of the most accomodating people i.e. anytime he isn't at uni basically from the sounds of it, he is just excluding a few hours he can't do it. He'll still be available most of the other times, it isn't his problem if that was when less people were available unless he was recruited specifically for those hours, indeed it seems he was contracted for 6 hours non specified (i.e. based on his availability) and he offered to work a lot more hours with a wide range of availability.... hardly sounds like an unhelpful employee.

Almost seems he is being penalised for being helpful in the first place, which is because the manager is probably stupid going by what has been said, granted one side of the story.

LOL,

Just tell him to stick it where the sun don't shine, honestly, why are you giving so much thought to this, surely you can go without the £30 a week he'd pay you for those hours until you find another job ? I love "No life" retail managers who think that minimum wage is enough to dictate people's lives and schedules. Your university is more important, if you like doing the photography thing then do that instead and try and if you really want try and find a shop job that isn't going to mess you around with 3 hours x 2, who the hell goes to work for 3 hours ? What a waste of time. It's Christmas and everywhere is hiring, I'm sure you won't have a problem finding another shop/supermarket job if you're not too picky.

Exactly. In fact if the OP wanted to play them at their game, see if you can fit in your 6 contracted hours during the week, and then when they moan about you not doing Saturday mornings, point out the fact you've already fulfilled your contractual obligation. :p
