i have a q6600 and a 4870 512

i have the whole lot running at stock

even tho i have more fans than any1!!!!! :(

i tried overclocking twice following guides to like 3.0ghz

and 2 motherboards fried in 2 weeks

on stress tests like 3dmark, crysis etc

am i losing much fps on stocks? and if i am how many average?

Overclocking a q6600 to 3ghz is definitely not rough enough to fry 2 mobos. - especially when you have a Tuniq Tower and all those fans..

What mobos were they?

lol

ok il try my best to give a good outline on the main things you need to do.

2 main things...Vcore and FSB.

set the multiplier to 9 and use a calculator to figure out what clock speed you want. eg if you wanted 3.2GHz you'd type 3200 devided by 9 into a calculator to find out what you need to set the FSB at to get that clock speed. so the answer would be 355.5 (356 rounded up). so set your multiplier to 9, set your FSB to 356, save settings and bam!!!! you have your cpu at 3.2GHz.

Now onto the voltage. at first, just keep that on default and try and get to 2.8GHz just to get the hang of it. then when you want to get 3GHz+ you will need to up the Vcore by a few notches. only do one or two noches at a time though as it increases heat by a lot.

heres an example of my first overclock using a Q6600.

Vcore: default
Multiplier: 9
FSB: 334 (rounded up from 333.3)

to give me a clock speed of 3GHz (9 x 334 = 3006 = just over 3GHz)

heres an example of my second overclock to show you Vcore in action:

Vcore: 1.35V
Multiplier: 9
FSB: 367

to give me 3.3GHz

Use Prime95 to test for stability (5-6 hours+ is stable in my opinion) and be aware of temperatures. I see you have a tuniq tower, thats a good quality cooler, i should expect atleast 3.3GHz from that once you get going.

sorry if it seems like i was stating the obvious to you, i dont know your level of knowledge on this subject. if your still confused just ask cos i was in the same boat not long ago. and now check my sexy sig!

good luck

Just clocked my Q6600 to 2.8MHz without increasing the voltage, ran prime 95 on Small FFT for 40 mins successfully. Load temp was 50 degrees for first two cores and then 46, 48 for the last two. Does this mean its fine to use this clock without increasing the voltage, or should i do it anyway to be safe?

Will run prime again overnight to further test the stability, but assuming all goes well, can leave it as is? (Until im braver to oc more :D)

sounds good! push it further!

and its perfectly safe to use the stock voltage, there is no need to increase it unless it is unstable.

Now im not sure as i think my virus scan could have caused it, its set to scan every night at 2am (I know, im paranoid). The test results state the following:

As you can see, everything passed up until 2:47am. So would this mean its stable or should i run another test tonight and disable the virus scanner?
Im new to using prime, but am i right in assuming it should have continued to test after the 48k test?
