Am I too young for a Rover 75?

75's are bargaintastic Motorway munchers. Arguably better on the Motorway than any of their rivals and that includes the Mondeo, but the tradeoff for this is that its ability on A and B roads is... not hot.

But if you spend most of your time on the Motorway, why not? You will struggle to find a better cruiser for the money.

I used to use the same taxi firm all the time, but one night when they said they were fully booked all evening, i was forced to use another company. They were about 5 or 10 minutes late to pick us up at the end of the evening, and when this rover arrived i raised my eyebrow, and jumped in.

Absolutely gorgeous place to be, i've rarely felt so good in the rear seats of a car, it was a lovely place to be.

I now only use the 2nd taxi firm.

My dad had one ages ago when they first came out, the seats were like arm chairs and was very quiet even at 130ish. They are nice places to be inside thats for sure, can't comment on anything else as I was too young to care about things like handling so don't really remember much else about it :p

They didn't seem to handle that badly for such a lardy front wheel drive barge. Not much poke though and you really wouldn't want to push one too hard.

The old man has had one for over 4 years now.
A brand new 75 2.0V6. It's the "club" model, so not the conn, but it's well specced enough.
He loves it. He's a very "keen" driver and he enjoys it as much as he's enjoyed any other saloon he's owned.
I've driven it - apart from the (imho) crap visibility, it was ok. I hated the way the throttle had a delayed response, but it might just be on the V6.
It has survived 4 trips to Europe completely over capacity (the rear suspension is sweaky now though), and not much has gone wrong - few bits of trim fell off, ABS cable failed which was fixed for free outside of warranty, boot has kind of fallen apart, but thats mostly from being packed with luggage and wine.

All in all for £3,500 - that is a fantastic bargain!

As a side not, my father was actually thinking of buying the car from the company, but for quite a bit more than £3500 - I might mention it to him...

A bit OT but a friend of mine has a MG ZT260, and it it just simply one of the best things that Rover have ever made. It handles beautifully, though of course it's RWD so not really comparable to the standard 75. Unfortunately, I don't think prices on these will be falling too far for a long while yet (only 650 MG ZT 260's and Rover 75 V8's ever made).

2 good site to have a look at about rovers

rover rons tuning boxes are a great bit of kit

my rover 600 diesel is up from 105bhp to 134bhp with 1 of his boxes & abit extra boost.
also that boost is from tickover to redline and not just top end, the car is so good now it feels like a different engine has been fitted
his new tuning box for the 75 boost the 116bhp model to 144bhp\ the 135bhp model up to around 155 mark and for the ZT135 up to 160bhp
there not just guesses there dyno readings
it a shame rover didn't make the like that standard.
the guy certainly nows his stuff and his site is a good read.

as for being to young mate, if you want one go for it.
im going to be getting one sometime this year, although im not so young lol

The Diesel engine is a BMW unit, the M47: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M47

Hmmm, the information on that page is wholly inaccurate - firstly no straight 4 diesel engine ever made it into the E39 5 Series, secondly, the 4 cylinder diesel in the E46 3 Series was most certainly NOT introduced in 1997 - the E46 itself didnt appear until late in 1998 - so I wouldn't trust its accuracy.

Perhaps, a better source of info than Wikipedia.

There are advantages to a car like a Rover. It is less likely to get nicked by a boy racer. And the police are less likely to look at you as you drive past. Anonymous cars can be very useful. Ask any one who drives a Subaru Impreza how often they get pulled over...... :)

Comfy slow cars are also very useful for avoiding points on one's licence. That calm, laid back driving style with a decent stereo means for a calmer driving time.... less stress... and less points. :)

Yes it didn't look right when I first looked at it, but not knowning the specifics I couldn't say what.

The M47 is the Diesel engine used in the 75 though :)
