Am I Wasting My Time Trying To Get Fallout 3 GOTY To Work?

Most people get crashes on fo3 tbh, try all of the fixes such as quadcore(think you've done that), 4gb enabler, ffdshow fix and get some of the stabilizing mods from Fallout Nexus mate.

Try looking through the mods thread where most of the fixes are discussed. And i would definitely recommend CASM, which creates an autosave every minute or 3, then you will not lose much progress

hmm

I know the game is buggy and runs like crap, but you probably just making things work by fiddling with all the above.

This is normally the case, but Fallout 3 is a game that is very buggy, and does require some finessing to get working on some people's systems. Have a read of a couple of the articles detailing fixes for it.

When i had a problem on my last computer, it was the FFDShow tweaking that worked for me. I haven't tried it on my new one, and to be honest, i'm not looking forward to trying it - fortunately i have plenty of other games to play in the meantime.

Ive also recently done a replay of FO3 and had exactly the same experience as you. Random crashes, laggy play and laggy sound, also a refusal to even get past the first menu screen.

I tried most of the suggested fixes in this thread and none of them helped.

I have quite a powerfull system and a decent graphics card, but on a whim I dropped some of the settings.

Re install the game so its in a fresh state. Use the launcher program to change the options. Set AA to off(best performance) and set Screen effects to None, AF to 4. There may also be a change I made to 1 config file regarding the number of CPUs/threads to use, but tbh only change this if you continue to see problems.

I use win7, the steam GOTY version and have managed almost a full playthrough of the entire game @1920x1080, with tonnes of mods installed. I think its crashed on me maybe 5 times in total since I disabled the HDR/Bloom setting.

I should add though I have very few codecs installed on my machine as as us VLC for video playing, so I dont even have ffdshow installed.

Always a mistake speaking too soon!

Hope you sort it, I gave up trying to get FO3 working on my PC, just crashed whenever I left the vault, gave up in the end which is a shame.

The only time I ever had this was during my second playthrough when I had the \ key mapped to a movement. Only worked it out because when mapping the key it would show a different key graphic as though it didn't recognise that key in the first place.

I found Fallout3 to be rock solid stable with Nvidia cards. Back in 2008 I tried ATI 4870 & 4850's & both would give me frequent lockups. Without changing anything else except removing the ATI drivers & putting in an Nvidia GTX260-216 the game transformed into rock solid stable & I often played for up to 8 hours in 1 sitting with no lockups/crashes whatsoever & GFWL never ever caused me a problem with it either!! This is with no ini tweaks at all BTW even though I was using a Core i7-965 with 8 threads!!!!

BTW: XP + GFWL needs hotfixes from MS. GFWL was not designed to work with XP so you need to download some hotfixes before it will work properly on XP.

Ah well, I get the same crashes in Windows XP as I do in Windows 7.

Removing my soundcard doesn't help and I've tried running it with the graphics turned down to a minimum but no luck.

The only option I've got left it to mod the game to bits in the hope that the mods fix it.

Off to Fallout Nexus I go....

Check out the mods thread(currently on the first page) there were loads of fixes and stuff mentioned:)

I think I've fixed it!!!! \o/

Fresh install with no changes, not even the ini file one and installed the 32 bit version of the K-Lite Codec pack. I had already tried the 64 bit version as my OS is 64 bit but then I thought that as fallout is a native 32 bit app I'd be as well trying that one.

Played for 4 hours last night with no crashes. Gonna try again tonight and if it still doesn't crash then I'll break the mods out. :)

Bugger.

Tried to play Fallout 3 and can't get past the first slide when the title screen is coming up.

Only thing changed since last time is my graphics card from a 4870 to a 6950.

I had this ^^ problem with my 5870.

Use the launcher thingy and check the settings.
There is an option for super duper lighting. I think its labeled "hdr bloom" or something.
Disableing it helped for me.

Also if your using an Asus soundcard, make sure to switch of the GX option.
Its the "fake eax" setting. It very rarely actualy works and more often than not causes crashed and lockups.

I also get a much stabler environment when I run through the script extender mod rather than the default launcher.

I'm not exaggerating when I say I have tried all of the standard suggestions to fix it.

I'm gonna rebuild my system and test each component because after my last upgrade I've been getting random BSOD's and that's never happended before so I really need to rule out faulty hardware before I take things any further.

I have a feeling my X-Fi Fatal1ty is the root of all my problems.

I just hope New Vegas isn't the same as I bought it in the last Steam sales.

It still uses Gamebryo unfortunately. However the latest official patch has fixed a lot of issues, and there are third party ones on the Nexus that improve performance as well.
