AMD processors have the memory controller in the CPU. An AM3 processor has both DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers and thereby will work in both AM2+ and AM3 motherboards. Older AM2 processors will work in only in AM2 and AM2+ motherboards has they have a DDR2 memory controller only.
Some AM3 motherboards have both DDR2 and DDR3 memory slots though:
If the friend of the OP has the original Phenom it will only work in AM2 and AM2+ motherboards. If it is a Phenom II it will work in AM3 motherboards which use DDR3.
