AM2? Question

seriously google "athlon am2" or "amd am2" and you'll find some good stuff on it. Add "discussion" to the end of either of those searches and you'll get even more stuff! ;)

that should cover the basics - but I doubt there is anyone who knows too many of the detailed facts - its mostly speculation when it comes to the details.

Seems that's all it really will be! Just DDR2 and a new socket type. I can barely retain my exitement

hehe :) yeah when I first heard about it I thought, awesome - next generation technology for me to save for, but reading more and more about it I am coming to the conclusion that you drew also. I will probably staty with 939 for a long time, I still have to get an NF4 motehrboard, dual core CPU and some nice clocking RAM.

Yeah... If I had the money to order today i'd be plumping for an Opteron 170, I found one for £285 inc vat! & A DFI NF4 Ultra-D & 2GB Ram etc.

true, like others have said - when a new socket comes out its not worth upgrading for at least a few months IMO. the initial 939 chips/mobos werent worth upgrading to from a 754 mobo.

i have a dual core sys now, so when i do upgrade, it will be to M2 but that wont be till 2007 at least.

Anyone know when we can expect to see the first AM2 motherboards and processors here in the UK? The wikipedia article on AM2 mentions "2006 Q2" but I read somewhere that it might be more like March. Anyone got any more info?

Whilst this is normally true, I am quite optimistic that the early AM2 boards will be decent. As I understand it, very little redesigning is required of either the mobo or the chipset manufacturers in order to support AM2. In other words, the migration to AM2 should be easy and painless for the mobo makers and so they have little excuse to screw up.

Personally, I am planning to wait for AM2 before I build my first home theatre PC. I really want to build my HTPC out of a 64-bit AM2 Semperon. There are no s939 Semperons available for end-users like us and I'd consider it lunacy to build a s754 system in 2006.

Thanks,
Jack

I think AM2 will come without to much fuss.People are raving about the new technology buts its just an extra pin and DDR2 nothing at all to migrate to If you are running a decent s939 dual core setup with some nice fast ram and timings.

the beauty of s939 is that you can get a really fast decent mobo for peanuts and a cheap dual core cpu and have a pc that would challange the new AM2 on its release.

surely the new sockets are meant to be faster right?
Thats all it Is imo its a just a new socket.

i believe it is just DDR II, i also read up somewhere that the cpu's that will be released will only be the same speeds as what we have on current mobos anyway. i remember seeing either a 2.6 or 2.8 as the highest.. not much of an upgrade?

im sticking to socket 939 for at least another year yet.

Until a quad core CPU that ive heard about, comes out, and the speed increased to over 3ghz.. at least ;)

so what will be the main benefit of this?.. if its the same cpu speeds thats just a rip..

their gonna need to be putting the cpu speed well over 3gig before i even get interested in it.. and knowing AMD, it will probably go to 3ghz and what will it be then? a new FX chip thats 600 quid? they need to go way over 3 gig.. anyone agree?

No, I don't agree. ure it would be nice, but 3ghz is just a number. A round one, yes, but nly a number.

The fact is these chips are mad fast, 3ghz or not. Broadly though I agre AMD need something more to combat Conroe, and going past 3ghz will help. To me though DDR2 is not the answer.

Well Im in the same boat as many people upgrade now or wait till M2, after a lot of thought I have decided to wait, bought 2GB of G.Skill ZX ram to keep me going till probally January next year, of course I could upgrade now & blow £700+ to only spend maybe the same if not more again come this time next year.

I'm not an expert on anything but if your a patient person like me who doesnt have a 30k+ salary or whatever then my advice is start saving now for next year, at least then you will have had time to have sufficient funds for a really nice upgrade - hopefully!

I may even wait longer, till the technology matures abit more & let the guinea pigs do the testing to see what boards are more stable & which are the best Overclockers etc. :)
