ok well AM2 is on our door step... i need some info?? are there going to be any AM2 dual socket boards for allowing some dual core optys to be put together?? plus whats better about AM2?? so what im askin is AM2 coming to skt 940

I shouldn't think AMD will bring out opty's cause they're supposed to be for servers only, they were selling really well on 939 so it would be a good move.

AM2 is essentially a revision of current 939 CPU's so it takes DDR2 (940 pins now).

I agree, 4000+ looks good. I should imagine 2.0Ghz with 2x1mb L2?

AM2 is for home and office systems. So no dual sockets afaik.
There will be for Socket F, I'm sure.

A few mobo specs are up too: Asus, Abit, MSI

Even though I'm skipping AM2 and waiting for Conroe, it will still be interesting to see what these new toys can do.

I spazzed up, totally got the wrong idea. :D

no worries :)... im still stuck as *** i am to do. im in process of building a pc, just sold the one in my sig and am upgrading, not waitin around for DX10 cos its like a mirage at the moment, my first option is a dual skt 940 board with a opty 265 and get a second one later on and DDR mem, but AM2 has just arrived and i dont know anythin about it would a dual core AM2 with its DDR2 be as good and and more future proof than a eventual quad core from my original plan

I can't wait to get a AM2 next year, with a DX10 graphics card via PCI Express. When is OCUK selling there own AM2 branded PC's.

Here's the specs of the AM2 X2 4000+ from a competitors site:

Manufacturer: AMD

CPU Type: AM2 Athlon 64

Socket: AM2

CPU Model: 4000+

Core: Windsor

Core Size: 90 nm

Clock Speed: 2 GHz

FSB Speed: 2000 MHz

L1 Cache (Total): 256KB

L2 Cache (Total): 2MB

Have full specs on the AM2 AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+ and the AM2 AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core FX62. Also which motherboards support DDR2-1066, and one more thing what are the specs of DDR2-1066 ram.

I've heard that AM2 is not much faster than the current 939 cpu's?

I think I'll wait and see waht Conroe can really do first, in terms of in games performance that is, seen plenty of other benchmarks, but until I see real world performance in games and the frame rate benefits, I won't make a decision either way.

It all depends on the ram and motherboard you use. As well as what CPU, but OCUK your one of the shops.

Which I may buy a pre-built AMD AM2 PC off, just make sure you sell them with Blu-Ray RW drives in them. And an 500GB or 750GB HDD.

That's right, AM2 just offer the same 939 CPU's on a newer socket, more or less, and the addition of DDR2 memory. Conroe will definatley be worth the wait. Gibbo posted the 3D Mark scores of the new AM2 ultima system, it scored 40k+ in 3DMark 01 with 2x 7900GTX. An overclocked Conroe with 2x X1900XT-X got 60k+ in 3DMark 01, 50k+ in 3DMark 03.

See this thread in the Gfx card forum posted by Gibbo if you're not convinced of the performance of these new AM2 systems ;)

The new nForce 590 boards are supposed to give an excellent added performance boost for nVidia 7900GTX cards & above
