AM2

See this thread in the Gfx card forum posted by Gibbo if you're not convinced of the performance of these new AM2 systems ;)

The new nForce 590 boards are supposed to give an excellent added performance boost for nVidia 7900GTX cards & above

Which doesn't seem to be much different to a top end S939 system to be honest.

Sod benchmarks what's it gonna be like in games???? I don't reckon it's gonna be a huge step for the outlay involved - new mobo, new mem, new cooler........

well put, that's my stance too. Intel have been clever and released their CPU's to the hardcore overclockers, however I've been following their progress, they've stacked up some real impressive benchmarks, but the info of actual in game performnce is still thin on the ground. I think Cnroe will be a real success, as it allows the tweakers a lot of room to oc on air, for many that's a selling point in itself as it's their whole hobby. Others are more concerned about real world benefits rather than world records.

why do people care so much about 10 more frames/second in games already running at like 60+, theres absolutely no difference visually and people who say there is are just trying to justify why there computer is better than everybody elses. im very tempted to stick with AMD since all intel rigs i've use are heaps of crap that generate too much heat and don't do anything fast enough to make me say 'wow', im convinced conroe won't make me say 'wow' at anytime either, 60,000 in 3D mark, IMO theres no difference between 60 and 65 frames/second in 99% of games, so conroe isn't bringing anything shockingly good to the table. (please no conroe fanboys giving me any grief about this at all, its an opinion, just like yours, nothing more and nothing less)

Except none of your points are really truth?

Conroe can be passively cooled as it runs so cold.. and way superseeds any AMD offering on the market at the moment.

Picture of a Conroe with passive cooling from xtreme system forums.. this cpu is also overclocked from 2.1ghz to 2.9ghz on stock volts.

Thats all I have to say tbh - I'm no fanboy to anybody, I have an AMD chip atm.. I just want best price per performance.. and Intel is going to give me that.

lol i love these passive coolers, there bloody ridiculous, like sticking a block of apartments onto your CPU. its hardly impressive to 'passively' cool something with such an enormous block of copper and aluminium that is similar to one of the world trade centres.

Edit: as well how on EARTH can someone say there is really a shocking difference in five measly frames in a game thats already running perfectly, im sorry but theres just no difference in my experience on games, absolutely non at all

AM2 won't be any different in games to high end 939 systems, that's why everyone is waiting for Conroe, it'll wipe the floor with all AMD's systems.
You know AMD will then make a better CPU for AM2, and then wipe the intel floor again. Also does the Conroe support 64bit.

From what I'm hearing, the next generation A64 will be on a par with the Conroe. Of course by then Intel will have a new core out (but it will need a new socket).

thats proberbly completely true, how long that takes...who knows? but i don't get the mentality going on here, why on earth is sooo many people here dying to waste tons of money getting a 'conroe' rig when they already have 3.0Ghz opterons with great graphics cards. my guess its so they can say 'mines faster than yours' and show off superpi times. but its odd this thinking, im sorry but its not gonna be like going from a mini cooper to a lamborghini gallardo you know, its gonna be like going from a mini to a fiat punto.
