AM2

thats proberbly completely true, how long that takes...who knows? but i don't get the mentality going on here, why on earth is sooo many people here dying to waste tons of money getting a 'conroe' rig when they already have 3.0Ghz opterons with great graphics cards. my guess its so they can say 'mines faster than yours' and show off superpi times. but its odd this thinking, im sorry but its not gonna be like going from a mini cooper to a lamborghini gallardo you know, its gonna be like going from a mini to a fiat punto.

Well the mini is a lot cooler than a stupid italian fiat punto! Behave yourself! :D

With that said I'll propably skip the conroe wave, and keep my x2 [email protected] at least a year on. Should be plenty for all games :)

Yes and that's a guess only...

We'll just have to wait and see what the Conroe chips really bring to us. I'm sure by September time when the chips really do hit the consumers - we'll see some more clear cut benchmarks and performance charts to make up our own minds on whether these "Conroes" are decent buys.

I for one won't be looking to upgrade my X2 4400+ yet. But am looking for a nice cool CPU for an HTPC system and some of the Conroes seems pretty delightful in my opinion. :)

I don't really think anyone is really in a position to say "AM2 is crap, go for Conroe" to be honest. For starters, neither chips are out yet, and benchmarks that are based on prototype models are hardly all that reliable. Another factor which people seem to be overlooking is that fact that AM2 is going to be around for a while when it is released, and will probably see several generations of CPU's, many of which will probably kick Intels ass, by looking at their plans for 2007, I'd say intel wont be enjoying their triumph for long.

well put, that's my stance too. Intel have been clever and released their CPU's to the hardcore overclockers, however I've been following their progress, they've stacked up some real impressive benchmarks, but the info of actual in game performnce is still thin on the ground. I think Cnroe will be a real success, as it allows the tweakers a lot of room to oc on air, for many that's a selling point in itself as it's their whole hobby. Others are more concerned about real world benefits rather than world records.

Yeah true, Also it'll take a few months for all the mobo's to become stable, I love to see the first adopters shell out all the cash find all the bugs for me (sorry early adopters here ;) ) lol.......

I do giggle at all these people who love benchmarks, All that money just to get a high score, I've never pretended to understand that. I understand maybe the usefulness to compare similar computer set ups but using them as justification for spending obscene amounts of cash for a high score just doesn't make sense.

Except none of your points are really truth?

Conroe can be passively cooled as it runs so cold.. and way superseeds any AMD offering on the market at the moment.

http://coolaler.kj.idv.tw/conroe/14.JPG

Picture of a Conroe with passive cooling from xtreme system forums.. this cpu is also overclocked from 2.1ghz to 2.9ghz on stock volts.

Thats all I have to say tbh - I'm no fanboy to anybody, I have an AMD chip atm.. I just want best price per performance.. and Intel is going to give me that.

May I just make a point that, that is a Tuniq Tower Cooler and the Fan is inside the HSF? ;)

you might be interested in the 35W TDP X2 (not sure what speeds, 3800 and 4400 i think) that AMD has announced for X2. Thats gonna be one cooooool running chip.

All these chips are 90nm, right? AMD planning any 65nm and or smaller any time soon? or will that be a on another new Socket?

Conroe is 65 i think, amds 65 will be on am2

it doesnt look like the AM2 will offer any kind of major performance increase over a 939 nowdays. Some cases its been shown slower!

I know the benchmarks are only from prototype chips, however i cant see performance increase that majorlly - they hardly going to redeisgn the whole chip.

As for 'Conroe', it will be nice to see. AMD have had no real battle for a long time, with some pressure from Intel we might finally see some leaps in performance rather than the 5%/10% quicker leaps we been having from AMD.

Many of us can easily overclock the differents, afteral the min cpu you can get nowdays is 3Ghz (real or fake clock speed) and clock to 3.8+Ghz (21% increase). Cpu's used have a range like 1Ghz to 2Ghz (100% increase). We not seeing Cpu's increasing that much, but the price has stayied

My money at the moment is on Intel in terms of performance gains, afterall it's totally a new chip. Hopefully when it's released and the price is right - it'll justify it as being a worthy purchase. These new AM2 chips does not impress me at the moment - nothing special.

it needed to be, Intel was far behind. The Pentium 3 had a better design, look at the benchmarks of Pentium-M o/c'ed

Although we've had benchmarks from ES samples, they seem pretty consistant and from very good sources (Anandtech). Benchmarks of both AM2 and Conroe have been from ES samples, so although it should be taken with a bit of salt, it is a fair comparison to draw because they're both ES and are in competition of each other.

AM2 might not be around for as long as first thought, there have been rumors that there will be another socket upgrade (AM3) within 2 years or maybe sooner. Of course this is just rumors but this has happened before (754 -> 939).

As much as AMD have plans for beating Intel with their next proc, you can sure as hell bet Intel are planning stuff as well (and you can see from both processor roadmaps for AMD and Intel)

well put dunky, gonna be a great few years for the consumer it is, the competition between AMD and intel is officially on now, there both close in terms of performance and value for money with there new products. ATI and nvidia is also a good scrap, also running very close in terms of pricing and performance with eachother, so the only people that can benefit from all this rivalary between these huge componant manufacterers is the consumer, or us :)
