AM2

I am no fanboy, i have put across a balanced arguement. You have posted nothing of interest to this discussion.

i have posted nothing of interest???? all i have done is stated the fact that C2d's are a much better upgrade option considering they perform better for the same money.

What mobo/ram do you currently have? I would keep the socket 939 for the moment and buy a dual core for that. Easily the best price/performance upgrade over buying a am2/conroe mobo + ram + cpu.

I have a 939 4400+ from OcUK and it runs at 2.8Ghz on stock volts.

Was going to upgrade to AM2 but when i realised that the AM2 wasn't really any faster than 939 for same processor spec I thought that it was a waste of money moving over. 2.8Ghz dual core is equal to fastest processor on AM2 currently and practical (not theoretical rating) DDR2 speeds over DDR are tiny due to latencies. Lower speed AM2 cpus have even been found to have even slower memory access speeds due to the AM2 memory controller bandwidth being tied more to the processor clock speed - not the case with 939.

K8L is the best hope for AMD but this is not going to be out for a while and I believe that it will be using AM3 socket with DDR3 RAM.

If you don't want intel then I would buy 939 cpu and save your money for K8L. When its released I am sure that there will be better and cheaper mobo options at the time aswell as AM3 and DDR3.

BTW: you can buy usb parallel ports.
