I haven't come across any (or many) application that pushes the total system memory footprint over than 2GB, in Linux. Nothing in Windows is even close to maxing out 4GB. I wouldn't worry.
You could always buy a 2x4GB kit, they are a bit more expensive than a 4x2GB kit and not quite as fast, but they would give you more expandability in the future.
Alternatively, get an X58 board like this which has 6 RAM slots
However, as has already been stated - unless you are doing very high res photo work or running multiple VMs then you will hardly ever need more than 4GB.
