AM4 5600X3D in the making

This is basically a marketing experiment.
If they see strong demand for the AM4 platforms they might choose to make a lower cost Zen 3+ DDR4 platform to complement Zen 4 and basically fight Intel on budget offering.
There might be enough 6nm laptop chips available to make a limited run desktop line with the leakier bins and use the node optimizations to put more X3D chips on AM4.

Personally I'd probably go for a 5950 X3D if it was price competitive with a 13700k setup.

I don’t think it is. Seems like it’s another limited run of salvaged parts.

I think this just goes to show how much life there was and still is in AM4, and just how much AM5 was an unnecessary milking. No need for AM5 at all, by the time AM4 is obsolete then people will be moving onto AM6 or even later.

I don’t see AM5 as ‘milking’, no one is forcing anyone to buy anything. It’s just general platform progression like we’ve seen for years. AMD couldn’t sit back and not offer a new generation when Intel offer PCIE 5 / DDR5.

It had to come along at some point. Whether it’s worth an upgrade for some people is obviously questionable, but that’s no different to any other time when a new platform came along.

Well, apart from the performance jump from the 7000 series and advent of DDR5.

This, not everyone upgrades with ever new cpu launch. A lot went from very old platforms to am5
If say you had skylake and you was upgrading go to a 5800x/dd4 would be stupid when am5/ddr5 is out and they will hold there new rig for 5+ years

AM5 was required though, PCI 5.0 and DDR5 and new technologies and there's noway AMD would let Intel steal the technology lead. However I think there is some truth in AM5 being used for milking the consumer, I don't get the impression that moving to PCI 5.0, DDR5, adding a few more VRMS and an LGA socket is enough to justify a 70% increase in motherboard costs. AMD is in a dominate position with it's product lineup at the moment and they can get away with charging higher prices for chipsets because they can.

Yeah indeed AM5 can do one as far as I'm concerned at the current mobo prices.
I'll upgrade with the next generation refresh probably and if all things are as they are now, I'll be going Intel.

With the state of the economy it’s hard to say. Prices are likely to be worse relatively.

This really, the cost/benefit especially for gaming was simply not there, and the price increases...my god. The B450 equivalent board to mine was 300% more expensive...

Why not? AM4 will be around for a good while yet. This would be great for my son who is on a 1700

I don't know any AM4 motherboards supporting an 1st gen Ryzen such as the 1700, which will support this CPU.

This CPU would have been useful before AM5.

I’m sure a few do, the Crosshair X370 for example supports every generation from the first Ryzens up to and including the 5800x3d.

Sounds like they’re trying to offload excess production of failed 5xxx chips/gain market share for AM4 users.

Might be great value, but it would have to be a good deal cheaper than you can get the 5800X3D for IMO.
