I signed up to o2, however i'm in an area that is not o2 enabled so i'm using just normal adsl. My line can apparently handle 6.5Mb or greater according to BT tests.

However since my broadband was switched on, on Monday, the max speed i have got is 1Mb.

Obviously something is wrong.

Depending on the line management system O2 are using - the first 10 or 20 days will be a testing/training period where a profile is created for the line - its not unusual to see speeds capped at 1Mbit for awhile - usually not more than 3-5 days but can be 10 days.

The problem is that you are on O2 access, them speeds are normal at night, so are pings of 120ms!

Its not at night, its all the time. regular speed tests vary from 0.9Mb to 1.33Mb

My router is a Thompson something or other supplied by o2. It doesn't really list very much network information.

Uptime: 2 days, 10:45:31
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 8,128
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

I can't really find anymore stats than that for DSL connection. The router has o2 firmware on it.

Not likely. Try the BT Speedtest and see what it says your IP profile is.
The O2 router will give ADSL stats too - i.e. attenuation, SNR margin etc.

You have had uptime of 2 days and sent and received no data?!

Your line says it connected at the full 8meg, could be just the training period as said before. Need the attenuation and noise margin to be sure though.

My router does not show the line stats anywhere i can see. I've been nosing around it for 15minutes now.

Interestingly, when i run the "check connectivity to the internet" it says i'm not connected. Disabled/Not OKConnectivity to Gateway (93.97.233.254)

Now got stats:

:O:O Line attenuation 8db?!?!

Thats the lowest ive ever seen!

You should be able to easily get the 8meg, ring O2 and find out whats happening

8Mbit sync, 8db attenuation, 15db SNR is epic - not the best I've seen but probably the second best - would prolly be good for almost 40Mbit if such a product was available.

Do you live next door to the exchange or something?!

How long are you in contract with o2?

Could be worth trying a provider like adsl24? People are getting sub 40pings with lines 3 times worse than yours!

You should easily see a fully 8meg down and 448 up and sub 20pings. I wish my phone line was that good :(

Quality of the line has relatively small impact on latency... you can see 10ms pings on a line thats struggling to manage a 250kbit sync down.

He deffinatly should be going for an ADSL2+ 24mbit package (if hes interested in getting the best the line can support) tho - infact AnnexM would work lovely on that line - should get 2.5+Mbit upload with little sacrifice of download.

If the exchange has been enabled for 21CN network/WBC connect then yes - from providers who supply the product you can get the basic ADSL2+ offering with speeds upto 20/24Mbit down and 1.3Mbit up... unfortunatly I don't think the standard BT ADSL2+ offering has support for any of the useful tech like auto SRA and AnnexM.

I'm in a similar scenario, getting 1mb-2mb speeds.

Rang o2, they have said nothing can be done about it basically. "Up to 8mb" means up 8mb and ANYTHING below, even so they have advised my line is also capable of 6.5mb.

To make matters worse, I'm out of 30 day cooling off period due to being on holiday for 2 weeks and they want £211 to cancel my contract. Pretty damn sickening :(

Keep asking for the profile to be reset and keep badgering them...

They are probably trying to cap everyone to 1-2Mbit tho to prevent overloading on their non-LLU connectivity as they seem loath to invest in upgrades for it :(

It's pretty hard to invest in any upgrades for a BTW product, it's not like O2 get to keep anything they pay for. If they kept adding centrals then they'd either make even less money from their Access customers than they already do, or effectively be paying to keep it running.
