Amazon Alexa vs Google Home

No difference. They are still listening for the same power.

I'm still amazed people still think these are "great" it's a military intelligence agencies wet dream.

So I have been looking through the thread and to be honest on page 1 I was quite put off getting one with the negativity people gave.
The sound quality was a concern due to me being deaf I knew it couldn't be tinny or muffled otherwise I would never hear the thing!
Anyway I digress, Bought a google home mini yesterday as I had a £25 Currys voucher so i thought well for £4 quid in the sale it wouldn't matter if I didn't get on with it.
Anyway, I am very very impressed with the sound quality and the product all round. No of course the sound doesn't compare to our hi fi system however for something like just listening to the radio or asking for weather and travel information and playing music whilst meals are being prepared it sounds clear and not tinny at all.

It does seem to get Seabiscuits requests better than mine, I think however this is due to me stuttering about with the request instead of thinking of the question then asking.
There is also seems to be certain ways to ask it yields better responses.

Why don't you buy yourself a Chromecast Audio and have the best of both worlds? We use our Mini to play the radio on a weekday morning, but in the evenings or when we're actually listening to music we just say "Hey Google play XXXXX on the stereo" and there you go. *NB naming your CCA as 'stereo' works very well

Together with my Harmony Hub it all works really well.

I think the Clowncast and Clowncast Audio's are about the only google products that work consistently well without any issues at all. I've got 1x Audio and 5x Clowncasts and they all work so well across a wide range of older-newer tv's.

we have a chromecast audio for the living room that is plugged into hi fi. We use the google mini for the kitchen and dining room when preparing food or housework.

I just sold my Google home, apart from telling it to turn my lights on and set an alarm, which was just pure laziness from me I personally had no use for it.
ttfi

i'd personally go with google. the actual home devices i don't think there's much in it, all are good and fine, but i think the system for google is overall better. it's better to have ok google on my phone and my home devices. when driving to the office, i'll say ok google, turn on office heater and it's done. i don't need to set this up with alexa and google. Alexa will never be on my phone.

I set up a recipe to turn on my Receiver (in my sig) set it to the BT input via a home voice command, I set up my home mini via BT to my receiver as a BT speaker which I assume would work but as yet it's failed every time.

The Chromecast audio is over headphone jack or Optical AFAIK so therefore in my case wouldn't work either as I would need a HDMI signal to turn on my amp.

I see you have a Harmony Ultimate, does that not have a Hub with it? If so just create a Harmony activity to turn on your amp, set the correct input (e.g. I have "Play Music" on my Harmony) and then use your Home to start that activity  Easy

Our 2 Google Minis are almost exclusively used to play music. I can control my Nest heating with it, but there's no point since it takes care of itself.

I'm not really interested in home automation right now so perhaps that's why it's under utilised.

We got them for free, I'm not sure I would have them otherwise.

I would have kitted out my place with Google Home but couldn't stand saying "Hey Google". One word works much better. Maybe that is laziness, but it's a machine for people who can't be bothered to switch on lights so...

I don't think my post is that clear ha ha.

I have set up my harmony hub to turn on the amp and set it to the BT input, which it does. I have then set up my google home mini via BT with the amp as a BT speaker. In theory after the amp is turned on and the BT input selected I should be able to say Hey google play XXXX on play music and.... nothing...

Ah I see. Can you definitely cast to a BT speaker from the Home? I thought it did it the other way round (cast to it as a BT speaker). I'd just pay the £30 for the CCA, it'll sound much better anyway!

erm not sure how to break this to you, but the amount of words doesn't make any difference, it's the syllables. A LEX A has 3. Hey Goo Gle has 3. ;)
