Amazon Data Breach

Didn’t have 2FA on my Amazon account, so I’ve stuck my number in and got the text code only for Amazon to ask for another number as a back up... or I can use an authentication app. I downloaded Google Authenticator added my account to it, it generates a code which I then pop into Amazon but it doesn’t seem to work, it keeps asking me to add another code via the authentication app. I’ve used both Google and Microsoft authenticators now, no luck with either.

Any ideas...?

I just did mine win Microsoft authentication app on my iPhone and it worked first time.

Make sure you don’t have any spaces between the code generated by the authentication app and that should work.

Change password as a minimum precaution?

Edit - turned on 2FA.

My concern is not really my Amazon account, it's other accounts that I use the same email for, that have lower security standards. I mean these hacker types are persistant. I lost all my info in the Talktalk hack and wasn plagued by telephone calls from Nigeria afterwards. I think it's simpler to create a new email address and use it for important stuff. It's pretty obvious that Amazon has no intention of giving us more information at this time.

OK I have some info now. It seems that it was part of the Amazon review system that in some way released email addresses and names. It was not a hack as such. Amazon are complying with new regulations which means that they must inform people they thinik were affected within 72 hours, but it is very likely they don't actually know the full extent of the problem and have simply not had time to prepare an adequate response. So at a guess this only affects people who have reviewed products on Amazon in the past X months. X being unknown!

Still not working, I deleted both a Google & Microsoft Authenticator, scanned the QR code and also tried typing the generated code in exactly as it showed. Quite frustrated with it now. It’s crazy that they require an additional phone number or the Authenticator app in addition to your regular mobile number to set up two-step.
