Amazon Echo - anyone have one?

Currently got a dot in my living room to control the hue bulbs, im eyeing up the full sized 2nd gen echo for the bedroom for controlling the hue bulbs in there and playing some music when people are upstairs.
Never really looked into what music i can actually play through it because of only having a dot with a crap speaker before, i've got amazon prime but not the music unlimited, not got spotify or anything else.
I know it can play radio stations like radio 1, but is there a way to get it to just play some random metal/rock only radio station for example?
I just say play me some rock/metal/country/blues/pop/70s/80s and she'll say here is some x from Amazon music, I've got one dot connected to my amp in lounge

with the Harmony Remote...on their website it says hub-based harmony products work but not IR-based, my TV and Sky have IR remotes

so does that mean it doesn't work with IR remote TV's/STB's etc...or is there a hub based IR harmony remote?

also..kinda related. it's showing I've posted in this thread before but can't remember doing it...any easy way to find the post other than going through 50 pages?

Use thread tools, find your name, then it'll list your posts in the thread...

I picked up the Harmony Companion Hub on black friday, the remote does not need line of site but you have a box that sits on your hifi stack which has the IR emitters in it, and they send the signal to the TV.

How do you get that working as surely tesco has a wide range of stuff? Do you just add it to a list?
Would assume he uses IFTTT to link to his Tesco online account although can not vouch as to how it differentiates between, say, fairtrade banana’s or organic. Perhaps he has to specifically say, ‘Alexa, please add FAIRTRADE banana’s to my shopping list’.

Yeah i started looking at the IFTTT app last night but it seemed to fail in the set up.

With tesco you have that initial basket where you just stick keywords prior to actually choosing a product. I presume it adds things to that which is great as a basic reminder.

We sometimes add stuff to an Ocado order using the Echo. It's quite hit and miss. Sometimes we'll ask it to add stuff, milk for example and it'll add smoked salmon.

When you're adding stuff from your Ocado favourites it works fairly well but searching for a new product is a right pain. Also it doesn't tell you about offers when you add something.

Looks like just in time for the Echo Spot launch, we can now get musical alarms. :D

"Alexa, wake me at 6:30am with Radio 2" worked on the Echo Dot this morning.

Seriously tempted by a Spot as a replacement for the extremely old alarm clock that's held together with duct tape. Just wish they weren't £120

Yes, finally! It's the one feature that's been missing that I've wanted.

Going to get a spot for my pc desk in the living room, then i can put the dot thats currently in the middle of my long living room at the opposite end and i dont need to shout anymore lol

Anyone got drop in to work?

I have several echos around my house, and looking in settings seems to show drop in is enabled.

However when I try Alexa tells me to go to the app, find the contact and enable drop in.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

I am all Google Home'd up now. Harmony on the TVs, smart light switches through most of the house, smart power sockets for lamps, electric heater and slow cooker (can prep in the morning and start/stop the cooking from work). I went with the Belkin WeMo kit for all the light switches and power sockets.

Seems a major oversight from Amazon that multi room music doesn’t let you add one Echo device to multiple groups, surely most users would want upstairs/downstairs/everywhere as a minimum?

Got my harmony hub up and running with Alexa. It’s awesome when my VM WiFi decides to actually work. Having really bad connection issues at the moment. VM engineer is coming to have a look, but I might have to buy a WiFi repeater. It’s a shame you can’t hard wire the dot as I’ve got RJ45 sockets coming out of my ears in the extension!
