AMD 2xx series how did they get it so wrong?

Temp is only one thing, if it is JUST temps holding back an OC then it's stellar for those who want to go for the 290 cards.

Has anyone put a 290Pro/X under better cooling yet and seen how far the cards will go?

Yeah, there's a number of posts dotted around with a variety of coolers tried. They look promising with better cooling.

Should we state some facts and weed out the trolls?

Do the 290/290x/780/Titan all offer quiet performance at stock, yes.

Is the 290x ahead of Titan at stock and the 290 ahead of the 780 at stock at low noise levels, yes.

Do all 4 cards throttle at various times at stock, yes.

Do all 4 cards have the capability to have their fans turned up for more performance and less throttling, yes.

Do all 4 cards have the capability of throttling less, running cooler and overclocking further with 3rd party cooling, yes.

Are AMD cards categorically priced under Nvidia cards and in fact caused Nvidia prices to drop significantly to where they are now anyway(realistically talking here about 780ti being introduced rather than Titan to be dropped to £500 and upsetting all those who bought them), yes.

Is the Titan/780gtx cooler SO good that it ends up faster than the 290x, no, does it still throttle, yes, is it any where near as good as third party coolers, no, so can the stock Titan/780gtx cooler therefore easily be improved on.... yes.

So to sum up, 780gtx cooler is NOT the pinnacle of cooling, it does not prevent thermal throttling and third party cooling is significantly better. The 290x is not the pinnacle of cooling, it does not prevent thermal throttling and third party cooling is significantly better.

But Nvidia are great and AMD failed? Yes, the trolling/fanboyism is insanely clear to see.

Could AMD have made the cooler £20 better and cool better, yes, could Nvidia, yes, but what was to stop both companies making it £40 better, or £60 better, or £100 better, nothing. Where do you stop exactly?

There isn't a card produced in the past decade that couldn't have had a better air cooler installed at stock and produced a better and faster overall card...... this is not a problem for Nvidia cards, just AMD cards, despite being in identical situations.

If we actually get down to the physics of the situation, a larger core with the same power output is significantly easier to cool. The 780gtx/titan/ti is 26% larger, that is 26% more area to transfer heat into the cooler, it is literally easier to cool and you literally can't say one cooler is better than another unless they are being used on the same heat source.

+1

As ever a well thought out and clearly explained argument - but trolls can't/won't read

i agree yeh, they went 25% smaller so they can bring them in cheaper, smaller is harder to cool, it doesnt mean it produces an immense amount of heat but its just harder to get the heat out of it

i think thats a good point thats overlooked a lot with "amds cooler sucks"

maybe people need to think of it like haswell and the temps

Yes, but it begs the question: given that the smaller chip with more transistors is harder to cool, why didn't AMD use a better stock cooler instead of the same ones used on previous cards? This is especially important given how the new card's performance and noise is now tied in with it's temperature.

Not going to comment on amd v nvidia but what i cant stand is that when your paying over £400.....yes OVER £400 u cant get a gpu with a decent stock HSF. Its criminal, end of!

well they are limited to blower type for their oem's etc
i personally think yes that blower type could get better, slightly bigger/better fan, better materials, but it would add a bit of cost to the consumer, the point is more that nvidia's cooler is maybe not much better at all

but i do agree & i think in hindsight they will see many amd users would have been willing to pay an extra £30 :(

Am I missing something, only it's as if the 290's aren't going to be released with 3rd party coolers? Once they do there won't be much in it price wise and the games bundles on offer could sway it for a lot of people I'd imagine.

from what we've been told they wont be until next year
thats a long wait :(

if they were out next week id be super excited and swearing like tom :)

I'd of happily bought a 290 instead of my 780 if they had a different cooler and came with the Nvidia game deal. I don't understand why anyone would want the noise of the stock cooler to make sure the temps are reasonable. It's clearly the better value card if the games don't factor in, just not with stock cooling.

What a load of rubbish, you pay double the price for a card which gets 10% performance boost (290 vs 780ti).

Just overclock the 290 to hell and the performance is equal, fit a new cooler if the noise bothers you

I really do wish this BS about the noise and heat on the 290-290x would stop, because that's what it is, just complete crap.

Either that or I'm as deaf as a bat, which can't be the case as I've heard the Mrs moaning all day.

Would anyone be willing to make a short video of either a reference 780gtx or titan at different fan speeds, say 20%, 55% and 100%?

I could go on the tube and search but it would be much better to compare using a member off here.

I'll do the same then on my 290x, very interested in hearing the difference.

You're completely missing the point that the 780's are widely available with much better cooling solutions than stock, unlike the 290's currently
