If amd r290's had a decent cooler they would have cleaned up.
The fact that it's as fast as a 780 means nothing if the card amd
Released has a flaw, people will wait for non ref cards, hitting release sales.
And WTf is with this switch for quiet or über mode ?
Firstly I don't use stupid words to describe things,
And second that is what fan profile software is for.
Word
Out selling the 780 though ?
HardOCP editor said:This sounds exactly like an NDA meeting I was in last week. The fan was referred to multiple times as "jet engine" etc., but all performance comparisons shown were with the card in Quiet Mode. Funny stuff when you are reaching for straws.
I think you will find that they are cleaning up with the 290
Gibbo is even making a point of telling everyone that the cards are loud and is still selling loads, what a salesman !!!!
I love graphs like that, I mean whose 290X actually drops to 725-850MHz and then oscillates wildly?
It looks like they took the reading from some earthquake and then labelled it "OMG 290X".![]()
It seems the HardOCP guy was not lying as Guru3D mentioned Nvidia were the ones pushing it,and that Toms Hardware did not actually discover it themselves.

That is the Nvidia slide with the R9 290X tested in quiet mode.
Funny, how they say "performance you can trust" when multiple websites showed problems with cards like the GTX660TI,GTX760 and Geforce Titan.
AMD spent twice as long, but couldn't find any flaws. #nvidiafanboyNothing surprises me these days. I reckon Nvidia must spend more time testing AMD cards than they do their own. I can't ever remember AMD spending time pointing out flaws with Nvidia cards.![]()

I can throttle my card pretty easily at the 'fixed' 47% fan profile.
Just saying.
why did amd only allow ref cooler's at launch ?
