AMD 555 BE CPU query

Hello all,

new to the forum and i've just bought and installed a AMD 3.2GHz 555 dual core processor, into a Gigabyte MA770-UD3 AM3 (Rev 2.0) motherboard

and im in Windows 7 watching CPU-Z and speedfan 4.40, the core speed and mulitpler keep jumping from 803 Mhz / x4.0 to 2109 Mhz / x 10.5

is there some software or settings that need switching off? as something seems to be controlling the CPU and only letting it run faster when demanded by the user....

oh i had that on my old motherboard and cpu (athlon x2 4600+ and gigabyte m57sli s4) and it didnt seem to fluctuate the CPU speed yesterday

the speed just stayed at a constant 2.4 ghz then
 
cool n quiet and C1E. Both settings involve clocking the cpu back when it is not being used to reduce temps and save power.

Most people disable them when overclocking since they can interfere with stability but when you are doing overclocking you may want to try turning them back on to see if they are stable.

Do you plan to try unlocking?
 
yes i want to unlock it to a 4 core, as thats why i bought this budget chip for £79 because i read that user 'pheonixUK' had posted up his screenies showing 4 cores at 3.8Ghz etc.

but i know 1% about overclocking

This is a good guide for unlocking.

And this is a good guide for overclocking using AMD Overdrive software. It is still useful if you want to overclock using the bios because it at least explains what all of the options are (the bios options are fairly similar to the overdrive options).

It is an option in the BIOS, similar to cool n quiet (I think they are normally next to each other). I think what it does is completely turns the cpu off when it is totally idle. But not completely sure.
 
yeah just updated to the latest BIOS version, then switched a total of 3 or 4 options in the BIOS

then waited for the EC firmware to change to 'hybrid' then as soon as it restarted the post screen showed AMD Phenom x4 B55, and then a smile on my face

so a quad core for £78 and motherboard for £57, bargain no brainer and job done.

Yet again I am left feeling a little jealous. ;)

Make sure you do a good long prime95 blend test to check it is stable before you start overclocking.
 
i think i should upgrade the heatsink and fan from the stock AMD one

im looking at the ARTIC COOLING FREEZER PRO v2

While in dual core run HWMonitor. Compare your core temps against your tmpn0,1,2 values. One of them will be a sensor on your cpu socket area and the temp reading will be linked to your core temps.

On my mobo (Gigabyte GA MA790X UD3P), TMPN 1 is always 10c hotter than my core temps.

When unlocked you can use the TMPN value to judge how hot your cores are running.

AMD state the max temp on a PII 550 is 62c, so this would take my tmpn to 72c. As quad cores run hotter than duals, I subtracted 5c from the max safe temp. This means on my setup, tmpn temp max would be 67 when unlocked.
