AMD 6990 - WILL BE RELEASED ON MARCH 8TH?!

Looks pretty sweet. It looks massive though!!

As a side point, if it comes in at like 500ish won't it just be better to get 2x 6950's that unlock for round about the same performance?

I reckon the GBP RRP including VAT will be between £399.99 and £449.99. Then, as all the retailers realise they won't sell anymore GTX580s except to rabid fanboys, they'll shove the launch prices to £549.99 and call it a bargain.

I do hope I'm proved wrong (but in a good way, not in a "it'll cost £549.99 regardless of retailer" way).

I wouldn't be surprised either.

I suspect the maths will be something like this.

((2 x 6970) - 20%) + markups because it's new tech + supply and demand.

Best prices will be on launch day.

3870 = , honestly I forgot how much I paid for it, value wise it was cheaper than 2x3870's by a decent amount.

4870x2 £330, when it launched there weren't 48701gb cards, 4870 512mb cards were £180, the 1gb card launched a while after at £210 so again good value.

5970, rrp £440 while rrp of 5870's were £300. Now that was just about the only card we got truly boned on prices and that was really limited in supply due to the TSMC screw up basically right after launch then retailers just continued to screw us for ages.

Expect the RRP to be WELL below 2x6970 prices, above 2x6950 prices but not much, and this time around seeing as 2x6950's unlock they might need to decrease the price a little more.

Also due to the time it took to release demand will be reduced as so many people who would have gone for one will have grabbed a couple single cards already.

Even if retailers try to get cheeky due to initial slow supply I'd expect demand to be pretty low(noise, price, better options, late to market) and it will be around the £425-440 mark within a couple weeks if its not there at launch.

I see where you coming from there DM and i tend to agree.

with two 6950 coming in at £420 (ignoring OCUK own brand which generally appear a few weeks after the named brands launch) and two 6970 being £550.
ill revise my earlier guess of £499 down to £479 at launch.

it doesn't look like it'll be out on the 8th..

this saying mid march. http://www.*****.net/content/item.php?item=29248

Fending off the Canuck beast is the job of the also-dual-GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590, said to be primed for a mid-March launch. This means that both cards should be released to the press at roughly the same time.

While confirmed specifications and release dates for both cards are still close-kept secrets, AMD is the first to bring its heavyweight contender to the public's critical gaze

but i'm still hopping for the 8th.

that article is dated 28th Feb, even the same site has newer news dated 1st march, showing clock speeds of 800MHz. which is contrary to the speeds from other sources.

size wise from pictures just looks about 2-3cm longer than my 4870x2 so its not exactly mahooosive just the square cooler that seems to be the fassion makes it look longer.

looks like this might be the next upgrade for me :)

i hope so ...because priced at £614.74 is way more than most of us would have expected.

On the other hand, Vortez reported that the 6990 is a 'because we can' card, and will not be sensibly priced (in comparison to the 5970)...

I'm hoping they're wrong...

well the 4 gig ram could have something to do with that price... but this year round they have competition from nvidia so unless there stupid 600 + would be a bad move unless nvidias card is going to be way beyond that. :S i hope not too i doubt id get one at that price.
