AMD 7990

Yeah that was pretty strange. I read reviews where it ran in the 70s and was quieter than a Titan, yet mine wasn't even close.

I've mentioned it a few times before but to me it just seemed like instead of binning lower voltage cores amd just started using any core they had on these boards to get rid of old inventory. I've seen tons of complaints of them running well into the 90's and comparatively few people saying theirs ran like what the reviews stated, "cool and quiet". Annoying as I really liked the look of the card and I'm in general a fan of dual chip cards since the old voodoo 5500. But when it routinely hit 103c it had to be returned :(

I think if it was hitting 103C the cooler wasn't in good contact. Mine ran in the low-mid 80s.
Though were you overclocking?

This is a great review of the 295x2 vs the 7990 amongst others.

Amazed the 7990 consistently beats a Titan black. 295x2 isn't fast enough and is too power hungry to justify an upgrade from a 7990 even at £700 unless you're running 4k.

well if so then it'll need a waterblock, because mine is way too hot, plus it's undervolted and also has its memory and core backed off too.........i've tested it, there's no fan that will cool it

so what do i need with a waterblock, the same sort of radiator as the 295x2, because i dont want to spend much

To be honest if you've not got any parts at all it's not cheap:

Pump/res
Waterblock
Radiator
Tubing
Fittings
Fans

However a watercooled 7990 is pretty epic. Mine is running off a mix of old parts I cobbled together and it's silent and overclocked is under 60 degrees.

FLIPPING HECK, but doesn't the 295x2 require that lot too !!!!!! because i see no pump supplied with that card

I've seen a suitable waterblock and then i'll need a smallish radiator like the 295x2.........tubes of course and then a pump ?

I'm not sure building a whole loop is worth it though, wouldn't get much change out of £200 I wouldn't have thought. Probably better off selling up and getting a newer card.

No the corsair has it's pump in the CPU block. Plus the system isn't designed to be taken apart and has no way of refilling it without adding a reservoir to the loop.

The only way to do it would be to buy individual parts.

The 7990 might run hot but for the price some people picked them up for last year brand new was incredible. £430 was the lowest IIRC, if you already had a loop and only needed a block you were laughing for value for money and performance.

I got mine for £360 :D
Then sold it a few weeks later for £550 lol

Nope all stock, took it apart and the contacts between the core and heatsink was good. Its rare to hear of anyone getting one that did what the reviews claimed, more often than not its regarded as a hot and loud card.
